Wizards has announced today they will not be deauthorizing OGL 1.0a. More importantly, SRD 5.1 will not be available under the Creative Commons License (starting immediately).
What does that mean?
Before this chaos broke out in January, the OGL 1.0a was the foundation of 3rd party development for 5e content, thanks to the framework provided by the linked System Resource Document 5.1 (SRD).
This framework, now available under a Creative Commons License (specifically Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (βCC-BY-4.0β)) means that if someone were ever to try and de-authorize the OGL again in the future, it is out of Wizard's hand at this point. As Wizards states - "Placing the SRD under a Creative Commons license is a one-way door. There's no going back.".
With the future of 3rd party development in doubt - we wanted to go back to before the threat of the OGL being deauthorized. With the SRD 5.1 in CC - we have even more security then ever before. And it's all thanks to you.
Letting your voices be heard, answering surveys, and tempering your emotions to constructive feedback has allowed us to ensure that 3rd party development of 5e content will remain secure.
Thank you, one and all.
IO Publishing is excited to get back to work, creating great content for each and everyone one of you. Looking forward to our future together.
