Summer fun - character rendering TUTORIAL, step by step, PSD-file

I have a tutorial explaining the drawing of this character with the background. Here I will focus on rendering light and shadow on our mouse.

1. White mice usually have pink ears, nose, tail, and paws. That's how I painted it.

2. Adding the "Multiply" mode to the overall shading (as if there were no main light source).

3. Adding light from the environment (the main light is still not there). On the surface that looks up, we apply the color of the sky, and the surface that looks down is colored in the color of grass.

4. Separately draw places that either create narrow slits, or should separate one object from another (for example, the head is separated from the back ear, the hands from the t-shirt). I select the desired area with the "lasso" tool (in Photoshop) and use a soft brush.

5. Draw the main light. The more the surface is turned to the sun, the brighter the yellow color. This layer is applied by the "Hard light" mode.

6. Go back to the shadow from step 3. I selected our main light from the previous step, moved to the shadow lighting layer, and removed the shadow lighting in the selected area. Now we have shadow lighting only where the main light does not fall.

7. Subsurface scattering. It makes our mouse more warm and alive. Draw a warm color on the border between the main light and shadow, going a little into the shadow area. Apply the "Overlay" mode.

8. This is what all our layers look like if they are applied to a gray color.

9. Turn on the layer with a flat color and finish drawing the eyes. Everything is ready!

The PSD source of this lesson is attached.
