Been watching Buddy Daddies, with only a few episodes left. It's a really cute series. I enjoy the dynamic between the two assassin dads and their adopted daughter, trying to juggle their work while raising her. The earlier episodes played with them having to do their job while she's there, which leads to some fun/gruesome violence that the daughter is completely oblivious to. Like someone getting shot in the head right behind her or being carried away in the middle of an intense gunfight. But then you have fun episodes where it's "it's field day at the pre-school" and that's it. No violence. I think it does a good job balancing the dark and light hearted sides of it. Course I still have a few episodes left to go, so dunno if it sticks the landing. Also saw Suzume in theaters. First half of the film I was super into it, thinking Shinkai may have surpassed Your Name. But then the second half doesn't tie the ideas it introduced together, instead adding more ideas and over complicating things. Or it straight up has things happen with no explanation why and then the characters move on because the plot needs to go forward. It doesn't completely ruin the film, but considering Shinkai is again reusing tropes and ideas from his past films he'd have a better idea on how to execute it. The ending of the film feels very much like Shinkai took the criticisms of Weather With You and its mediocre ending to heart. As in while I'm watching it I could see Shinkai turning to the camera and going "Look, I know I messed up last time, so here's a redo. What do you think?" Despite its flaws, I still enjoyed the film. I'll have to watch it again to get a better judgment on it, but I'd probably stick it in the third/fourth spot on a ranking of Shinkai's films. Swapping places with Place Promised In Our Early Days. That film's story is more tight than Suzume, but it isn't as fun.
