Sentai Filmworks was bought out by AMC Networks. That news came out of left field, especially AMC Networks of all people. They weren't the first to come to mind when it came to purchasing anime licensors. But considering they also have a couple other niche streaming services, like Shudder, I like to believe they'll be in good hands. My hope is that now with a larger company backing them, they'll be able to step up their simulcast licensing game. For years now they've relied on partnerships to get bigger titles (like with Amazon), but it was always small potatoes compared to what Crunchyroll and Funimation were able to snap up. They have a nice backlog of stuff, but most younger anime fans never care for that sort of thing. Another thing they do is list the people who worked on the English translation on the streaming video, which is really nice in terms of giving people their due credit. I know people like the idea of having all their anime in one place, but having stronger competition will benefit consumers in the long run as companies try to step up their game. Of course this news is just breaking, so who knows how things will go down, but I like to think that good things will come of it. Sure, it sucks to lose another independent anime licensor, but it's also nice to know that there's a good chance of its continued existence (and not get scooped up by Sony for a even larger monopoly).
