I made this video to celebrate the 20th anniversary of my webcomic, Slightly Damned. I started drawing its characters in earnest in 2003, and the webcomic launched with its first page on March 14, 2004.
I wanted to show people how far my art has come since I started making this series as a teenager. Sometimes it feels like the world is harsher than ever on artists who are just starting out. Trolls are mean to people who aren't instantly creating professionally polished work. Would-be creators are falling for image generation technology and mistaking it for art. Doing things the hard and slow way doesn't look appealing in a world where instant gratification is at one's fingertips. But lemme tell ya: even if it's hard sometimes, there's nothing like being able to look back and appreciate all that work pay off.
I hope I can continue to kick my own butt! I hope this stuff looks crappy to me in the year 2044, because it'll be proof that I continued to improve! And you can, too, even if it doesn't always feel that way!
Obviously I don't own the rights to "Carry the Weight of Life" by Kenji Hiramatsu and Yasunori Mitsuda (made for Xenoblade 3). But I watched a bunch of AMVs during my formative years in the 2000s, so I just couldn't let go of the idea of using any song I wanted.
