Craving the Unusual in Photography. Things That Inspire Me in a Photographer’s Work

I’ve spoken many times about the importance of connection and communication between a model and a photographer. But today, I want to share some thoughts on something else—the visual side, the photographer’s portfolio.

I enjoy working with all kinds of people. If I see genuine enthusiasm and inspiration in someone’s work, that already earns my respect. But there are a few qualities and skills that I notice especially—and when I see them, it makes me genuinely happy.

Authenticity.
Even if the aesthetic isn’t something I personally relate to—if there’s something unique in it, something that feels real and alive—that’s wonderful.

Spontaneity.
The ability to catch a lucky moment: the light, the situation, an accidental accessory or a prop. The courage to experiment and go beyond what was planned.

Portfolios that show nonconventional beauty.
Different ages, different genders, different life stories—portrayed with love and respect.

Or portfolios in which the photographer deliberately steps away from traditional beauty standards, showing their models in unexpected roles—controversial, provocative, even unsettling—full of surprising emotion.

An eye for unusual composition, framing, and perspective.
When the photo is interesting not just because of who’s in it, but how it’s built visually.

The ability to capture motion, energy, and the moment.
When done well, it breathes life into still photography.

Attention to Detail

I notice when a photographer removes visual clutter—whether during the shoot or in post-processing. That level of care adds polish without sacrificing authenticity.

Curatorial Taste

It’s one thing to shoot great images; it’s another to choose the best among them. A trained eye can identify the rare gem hidden among a hundred almost-perfect frames.

Aesthetic Intelligence

There’s an art to highlighting beauty—not just capturing it. It’s about understanding what will resonate with the viewer and consciously enhancing the subject’s presence.

Storytelling in Still Images

When each photo feels like a frame from a film—when composition, light, and expression work in harmony to create a mood or narrative—that’s when photography becomes poetry.

Harmony in Contrast

I admire those who dare to combine the seemingly incompatible—opposing textures, moods, themes—and somehow make it work beautifully.

Of course, no one is perfect—and I don’t expect to find a photographer perfectly tailored to me as a model. I know how challenging it is to develop each of these skills. That’s why I deeply respect the effort behind every strong portfolio.

At the same time, I’m constantly working on refining my own aesthetic sense—to better understand visual language and help photographers bring their ideas to life in the most honest and powerful way possible.

These are just my personal observations.
And now I’m curious—what draws you to a photographer’s work? What makes a portfolio unforgettable in your eyes?

Comments

Thank you! And yeah, i feel the same way about the vague narrative that leaves the room to think about your own story

Kate Ri

Great post Kate! I have an immediate visceral reaction to images I like. That being said, if I breakdown the reasons I like an image or a photographer’s style they would fit well in your categories. Very eloquently written. I particularly am drawn to images where the narrative is vague but it is clear there is a story.
