New Dorp HS Con Panel 5/10/25

Here's a video of my panel from yesterday's New Dorp Comic Con. It starts a few minutes in and the sound seems to be a little low, and from what I recall I mostly rambled -- on and mostly off topic as my brain led me -- but hopefully it's of some entertainment value.

Thanks to my friend Ron Hill, co-owner of JHU Comics on Staten Island for providing the video and suggesting I post it here exclusively for you folks. He might make it available to the public but however things shake out, here's 60-year old me talking almost non-stop about comics, cartooning, my career, meeting a baked Mark Hamill at SDCC, and some other things:

I had an absolutely wonderful time at the show. Friends from JHU were tabling next to me (Ron, Nick, Gore and Rory), they brought old stock of mine and they managed to sell a few things and rid them from the store (Bizarro Comics, some M&C back issues, a copy of the Beasts Omnibus). My friend Lazarus came by to hang out, I caught up briefly with some old friends from both JHU and Comic Book Jones, and some very nice people came by to the table and came to the panel. I literally never had a moment to myself and the line was a little out of hand at one or two points, I was expecting a handful of people to be there to get something signed but it was a much larger turnout than I've ever had for a local show, larger than I've had at any show in a very long time. Some folks drove in from out of state, some folks were on vacation from Florida and made the treacherous trip to Staten island to get some things signed. I was knocked out by the kindness shown to me, I came home with some gifts -- pins, Japanese snacks and a pair of Crayon Shin-chan chopsticks, and a number of wonderful drawings of the Eltingville characters, Milk & Cheese, Winky the Pirate Cat and even my of myself).

Not having done conventions of any size in over six years I wasn't super-prepared (I didn't bring money for change, forgot where my Tintin pencil case was and didn't bring any signage, or my banner, or displays or anything). I was pretty overwhelmed by everything but had a wonderful time. I hope I get to do some other conventions in the near-future to be able to meet fans from outside my cursed little NYC borough. My thanks to Arthur Vallario and everyone at the New Dorp Comic Con for inviting me, and to everyone who came out to say hi.

Tomorrow's live appearance is with a colonoscopy table. No video will be provided.

Photo above is of 45 yr-old me at Heroes Con in 2010. I still have that shirts. I still have a lot of shirts from 2010. And a suit from the 90s. Books > clothes.

Work happens, thanks for thinking of coming. I haven't done conventions all that far away like some folks -- I know Jill Thompson is in Finland right now! I've been to the UK four times back in the 90s, and Canada twice. I've traveled to Texas, San Jose, Washington, Georgia, Florida, among other states, and I've been to the San Diego con thirteen times. But I haven't set up at a show, before this, i about seven years or so. I'll consider going anywhere if traveling expenses etc, are covered, it mostly depends on that and my schedule. But no one's asked other than Heroes Con in NC these past few years.

I nearly drove three hours to see you! But work popped up ... Cheers to Ron Hill for capturing your panel. Here's to hoping more con appearances are to come for you. How far would you travel for a con appearance if you're invited? Glad you had a great time

Yeah, my friends and I were pretty sloshed and waiting for food and I used to draw on restaurant napkins all the time back then. This was the only napkin drawing I did that turned into anything.

That must have been awesome for you! I hope you can keep attending more events. I saw the YouTube video—LMAO! I didn’t know you were drunk when you created Milk and Cheese
