Upcoming: Blackwood Library Edition

So, hey, if you missed out on Blackwood volumes 1 and 2, or just really enjoyed them and like deluxe hardcovers, Dark Horse is going to be publishing a library edition of the first eight issues in October. The wonderful new cover art for the book is by Blackwood co-creator and artist Veronica Fish. I'm very excited for this new edition, especially as the paperbacks are dwindling from Dark Horse and this will keep the series in print. It'll be nice to have this on my shelf with the Beasts of Burden (and Dork, Milk & Cheese and Eltingville) hardcovers. I know Veronica and Andy Fish are up for doing more Blackwood stories, and I certainly want to continue with our plans with the series (we especially want to do the backstories of the main characters and how they came to the attention of the Blackwood scholarship program), so any support of this library edition will be appreciated.

If you aren't familiar with Blackwood, I basically think of it as a magic school series that knows that school sucks. We're eight issues into the series and the fall semester still hasn't started. Classrooms are boring, magic is hard and untrustworthy, science, pragmatism and secrecy is all part of the program. Most of the students at Blackwood have no idea why Blackwood really exists (fighting occult evil, collecting and neutralizing accursed antiquaries and tomes, avoiding bankruptcy and ruin, and training specific students as occult investigators and researchers, among other things). When the dean is found dead the staff realizes he went out with a headful of secrets and lies, and it's up to them and four unlucky scholarship students to unravel the mess and fulfill the college's true legacy or face the consequences (which are, y'know, cosmically dire). There's a lot of stuff going on, it's a fun little comic. Did I mention there's a two-headed mummy chimp? Well, there is.

Here's the solicitation copy (which doesn't cover the second series, because someone at Dark Horse was being lazy):

From the multi-Eisner award-winning creator of Beasts of Burden and the superstar artist of Archie and Slam comes this supernatural fantasy about a magical murder in a sorcery school, now in a deluxe, oversized hardcover format.

When four teenagers with haunted pasts enroll in Blackwood College—a school that trains students in the occult—their desire to enhance their supernatural abilities and bond with others is hampered by an undead dean's curse, ghosts in their dorm, a mischievous two-headed mummy-chimp, a plague of mutant insects, and the discovery of an ancient evil that forces our heroes to undergo a crash course in the occult for the sake of the world.

Collects the first two volumes of Blackwood in a deluxe, hardcover, and oversized format with a new cover, a bonus sketchbook section, pinups by Peach Momoko, Becky Cloonan, Andrew MacLean, Tyler Crook, and many more!
