Extended Cut Hoax Spectacular! with Chelsey Weber-Smith

Here is a longer version (Carolyn's Cut, if you will) of today's episode, featuring even more hoax goodness--plus a Nessie theory I personally find very persuasive.

Watching Dr. Fatima’s video about the Sokal Hoax rn and I would love to see/hear her as a guest cohost on an episode of YWA!! It’s got Hoax in the name!

Andrew Thompson

I think a hoax requires a level of obviousness that, if a reasonable person genuinely considered it for five or ten minutes, would conclude that it *probably* isn't true. It's like the opposite of a "sounds fake but okay" response. It also needs to have a planned point of clarification where everyone gets to be in on the joke and also being invited into the joke feels good. The NPR callers who agreed to play along were joining in on the hoax, and they thought it was fun and funny. Ideally nobody who gets taken in by the hoax feels *bad* about it; they are able to laugh at themselves because in hindsight, of COURSE it was a hoax. Fooling people into believing something that isn't true without the intent to come clean is deception; doing it in order to get money is fraud.

Anna Perry

I had to google the loofah thing because I couldn’t tell if it was also a sneaky April fools joke!

Nicole Grande

100% would travel to whatever venue you book to see that drag show!!!

Heather Woodford

RENESME 😂😂😂😂

Genevieve Cato

You would do "don't stop" by Fleetwood Mac for your bill clinton drag performance duh 😘

Kiki

So great to hear Wales being mentioned 👏

Dave Hyde

I already listened on the main feed, is the extra stuff in the beginning or end?

Morgan Ruoss

I want Sarah’s drag king Bill Clinton show!

Leah Dooley

I'm so sorry someone did this to you. That's messed up. I hope every time they wash their hands their sleeves get wet. And that their legs fall asleep the second they sit on the toilet, forever.

Erica Boisvert

Oh my god Sarah stop talking about my life with the not deserving love self hoax

Laura Patterson

I agree that Sarah Bill Clinton sounds a bit sexy ❤️🎷

Sarah Mercutio

Yess I was hoping you'd mention the spaghetti tree!

Lowri Jones

The spaghetti tree reminded me of this marshmallow farmer: https://youtu.be/yflTu150QZw?si=j7TQzk3xbqqIbaLe

Hannah Andrasi

I knew what the last hoax you featured was as soon as I heard the first words. One of my favorites too

Keanu

This was so fun! It crystalized some thoughts I had about pranks. I have 2 young kids and was actually just thinking about how fascinating it is to watch someone develop what Sarah referred to as "general knowledge" about the world. I was driving on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway with my 3-year-old the other day, and he kept exclaiming that "It's like we're driving through a forest!" My initial impulse was to correct him, but then I realized it really was like we were driving through a forest and I didn't need to explain that we were on one of many gridlocked highways in the DC Metro area, even though that's also true. Then today, my 6-year-old totally "got" me with a little April Fools prank, by very seriously insisting she hadn't brushed her teeth in the morning, even though she had. It was really fun to be tricked by her! Anyway, in both of these situations, there was some unexpected delight in being vulnerable and not insisting on the cool cynicism that I generally go through life putting up. I also showed them a NPS prank on social media, which said that the Washington Monument has two distinct colors because it used to be lowered down so planes wouldn't hit it. They both knew right away that it was a joke because we live in DC and they've been in and around it so much. It gave them a chance to feel wise and savvy.

Melbourne has a restaurant called The Spaghetti Tree.

Mileta Rien

I was sent a mean-spirited prank today and listening to the two of you discuss, laugh, unpick, empathise, and theorise about pranks has been just what I needed to settle me again. Thank you ❤️

Rhiannon Hart

Sarah "Slick Willy" Marshall-Clinton would lip-sync to Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow by Fleetwood Mac. OBVIOUSLY.

Mileta Rien

I would pay good money to see Sarah as Bill Clinton.

Erica Boisvert

I think they meant river otters. They are terrifying.

Erica Boisvert

If you put "Pranks are for people who do not have complex PTSD" on literally anything, I would buy it

cass

Sarah Marshall Drag King special when

Doyle Just Doyle

Sarah! It’s my cptsd and growing luffa era too 😂 💖

Julia Fiore

Sarah! If you lip sync as bill clinton you have to do “it wasn’t me” by Shaggy

Lauren LOSOYA

We went to Loch Ness when I was little, and I was SO SCARED of the monster, but my parents told me Nessie wasn't a scary monster--and to this day I still remember feeling brave and dipping my hand in the water.

MHW

Ahh. My podcast parents are back at it again😌

Lauren Witte

Thank you for getting me through my dentist appointment today 🖤🖤🖤 I have huge phobia of doctors and being touched and it was so much easier hearing the two of you talk while doing it

Zoey Charlemagne

I’m dying over the Bill Clinton impression 😂😂
