I'm the same age as Britney and it's been so eye-opening and uncomfortable to revisit these cultural moments. As a fellow teenager, I always felt uncomfortable with the implications of her being sexualized. To the extent she appeared to be a willing participant, I know that I consciously resented her for it. Learning more now as a middle-aged mom is breaking my heart!

2024-05-04 14:14:09 +0000 UTCJust a weird little aside about daiquiris in the gulf south (I am in no way trying to excuse the drinking with a tween, but I am trying to add more context): There are drive thru frozen daiquiri shops in Mississippi and Louisiana where you can get a variety of flavors, including a White Russian. It’s definitely where high school kids start drinking here. It’s a cultural institution here , especially during parade season. Again, not trying to excuse anyone’s behavior or say that the behavior was appropriate , but I did want to shed a little light on what might be going on as a Louisianan.

Yes, we were in university while you both were in elementary school or high school and indeed we knew a lot of things were bullshit lol. Actually, I was in university when ‘Hit Me One More Time’ came out and I thought it was the shit secretly because I was too cool to admit it. Sarah, I feel seen now whereas before I felt you were overlooking us a bit. And I was sad and not able to muster up a Gen Xer ‘whatever’! Thanks again for the amazing show.

People are coerced into parenthood. Should we outlaw those choices as well? How on earth does it make sense to respond to one person’s perceived loss of agency by robbing everyone else of their legal right to make the same (or different) choice? It’s just asinine.

Somehow even back then, when everything seemed so bright and promising for her and JT, there was a part of me that thought it was destined to end badly. And the reality turns out to be even worse.

It was my first tape and it felt like a big, grown-up thing. It really represented a first step into having my own musical tastes that diverged from my parents.
