Coby! Bud Cort (Harold) died today! https://variety.com/2026/film/news/bud-cort-dead-harold-and-maude-1236659856/

When Ruth Gordon won the best supporting actor award for Rosemary‘s Baby at age 72 she said “I can’t tell you how encouraging a thing like this is.”

Mark Pitta

I forgot there’s a genius at 1:17:24. I read once that Hal Ashby’s style was that he didn’t have a set style, but I think it’s just a cinematographers take on directing.

Bud Cort is particular favorite of mine. Pvt. Boone in the film version of M*A*S*H, star of Brewster McCloud, and as the Jersey John Doe version of God in Dogma... many years as Groucho Marx's roommate. The motorcycle cop chasing them across the Dumbarton Bridge is credited as "M. Borman" (as in Martin) was Tom Skerritt, who portrayed Duke in M*A*S*H.

Fabulous reaction, Coby! You immediately realized what Maude was going to do, and you realized at the end what Harold had done. When I first saw this movie, I didn't foresee either thing coming! I love how, after pranking so many people, Harold pranked us as well. It's a movie that you never forget. If someone else hadn't requested it, I might well have done so! :-) When this movie was released (in 1971), Bud Cort was 23, but he definitely looked younger. He was in "M*A*S*H" (the movie), which came out in 1970. Ruth Gordon died in 1985 at the age of 88. She was acting in movies and TV shows right up until the end.

If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out was not included on the original film soundtrack album. Was not released to the public until a second hits album was released. A newer soundtrack album has it three times, though. Wonderful song. It became my mantra. (And that sentence displays my age.)

Being from the Bay Area, we used to love that driftwood art along the 80 freeway. Funny that Hal Ashby made sure Ashby Avenue was in the shot.

Mark Pitta

I love the song at the end. And it’s not on the Cat Steven’s Greatest Hits that even my parents had.

Dorsalfinsky

Oh, fun! It’s been years since I’ve watched this, but I think I still remember every scene like it was yesterday! A great film with great performances! I’ll definitely be rewatching this one!
