A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1938) Discussion Group

Hi hi! So apparently I picked the wrong one, and people aren’t afraid to let me know… haha. Apologies to those that don’t like this version, but I wanted to start from the beginning and work my way through them. So next year I’ll do the beloved 1951 and in the meantime I hope you still enjoy this version, I did…! See you tonight, and I hope that everyone has had a lovely Christmas and holiday week! 🖤

Thanks Coby! This is a great classic. Humbug means a fraud or nonsense. You wore a sleeping cap because when the fire burned out the house would be freezing. That is why they had heavy curtains around the bed to hold your body heat. Workers did not get paid for Christmas until A Christmas Carol became popular and workers started demanding that they be paid. You can thank Charles Dickens for holiday pay. My favorite version is 1951 with Alister Sims, then 1984 with George C Scott, but they are all fun to watch!

This version is definitely worth a watch, if only to compare it to all the ones that come after it. Movies generally got darker and more serious after WWII, which makes this pre-war film seem a bit silly in comparison. Also, the 1951 version is a genuine British production, made in the UK with real British actors. (Did you notice that the conspicuously plump Bob Cratchit in this film is also the New York judge in Miracle on 34th Street?)
