2025-08-03 15:18:27 +0000 UTCAbout westerns: (no spoilers): - "Tombstone" is an all-star ensemble cast led by Kurt Russell. "Wyatt Earp" is also an ensemble cast, but led by Kevin Costner. "Wyatt Earp" is more historically accurate, but "Tombstone" is much more popular and widely known. - If you are going to be exploring western movies, you should know that they fall into several distinct stylistic categories: - Classic Western Style - early westerns through the 1950's, with some still made in this style through the 1970's. Directors John Ford and John Huston both fall in this category, and John Wayne continued to star in movies in this style until his death in the late 1970's. - Mid-Century Style - a few starting in the late 1950's were made in this style, but it really became popular with the "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), which is considered the archetype for Mid-Century Style. - Modern Style - starting in the mid-1980's, popularized by "Young Guns" and overlapping with the end of the Mid-Century Style. Includes both "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp", as well as "Maverick" and the new versions of "3:10 to Yuma" (2007) and "True grit" (2010). Both of these later two are based on books so are not really remakes of the older versions, but rather new versions based on the same original book source. - Neo-westerns - a "western" style story, but set in modern (20th or 21 century) time. Examples include "Hell or High Water", "No Country for Old Men", and "The Highwaymen". - Spaghetti Westerns - A group of lower budget movies from Italian production companies featuring 1-3 American lead actors, an Italian director and writers, and filmed in Spain (standing in for Mexico or the southwestern US) with Italian and Spanish supporting actors and crew. Each actor spoke their lines in their native language (English, Italian, or Spanish) and then all were dubbed in post production. The American actors' English was also dubbed by the actors themselves because the on-location sound equipment was not very good and picked up a lot of environmental noise. - "Unforgiven" (1992) is in a category all by itself. You should watch half-a-dozen to a dozen older westerns before tackling "Unforgiven" in order to fully appreciate how different it was from what came before. Recommended watch list (my opinion): "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) "Tombstone" (1993) "Wyatt Earp" (1994) "The Cowboys" (1972) "Breakheart Pass" (1975) "El Dorado" (1966) "Maverick" (1994) "The Professionals" (1966) "True Grit" (1969) "True Grit" (2010) "3:10 to Yuma" (2007) "Hell or High Water" (2016) The Highwaymen" (2019) "The Wild Bunch" (1969) "The Horse Soldiers" (1959) "Sergeant Rutledge" (1960) "The Long Riders" (1980) "No Country for Old Men" (2007) "The Shootist" (1976) - John Wayne's last movie "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965) - remade set in modern inner city as "Four Brothers" (2005) "Pale Rider" (1986) "Three Violent People" (1956) "Dances With Wolves" (1990) There is a trilogy of Spaghetti Westerns by director Sergio Leoni and starring a young Clint Eastwood, often referred to as the "Man With No Name" trilogy: "A Fist Full of Dollars" (1964) "For a Few Dollars More" (1965) "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" (1966) The first 2 are remakes of samurai movies from director Akira Kurosawa: "Yojimbo" (1961) and "Sanjuro" (1962), respectively.

2025-08-02 22:10:42 +0000 UTCLooking forward to Tombstone. I’m certain that you’ll like it. The Kevin Costner version was called Wyatt Earp. Tombstone is by far the better of the two movies.
