Glad you watched it. Agreed, it's not 2001, Kubrick and his approach to VFX was next level. I wish he would have done this one as well, but he had no interest in it. However, as you noted it's a great wrap to the mystery of the Obelisks. I feel like once they absorbed Bowman they were able to better understand humankind and help us. HAL's behavior explanation was also great to learn about, as well as the hidden conspiracy. You asked why Discovery's orbit was not steady. That was what the start of the movie was about: the Russian scientist hooked Floyd by telling him to check Discovery's orbit. Floyd realized that by the time the Americans got there Discovery would have crashed into Jupiter. It's unknown what caused the degrading orbit. If you haven't seen Interstellar yet, this has an interesting parallel aspect to it. It's also Christopher Nolan's finest film imo 😊

The Jupiter-Sun would be bad for astrophotography, lol. I recommend you watch Contact (1997). A truly fantastic sci-fi movie. I think you'd really like it. Would love to see you do a reaction on it.
