If you're still keen to understand the film better, you might try the novel on which the script is based, though truth be told it's been so long I don't recall whether it is illuminating, nor how closely the film hews to it. And I'm with you on the ending.

So glad you appreciated the influence it had on so many movies and filmmakers. I hope you get a chance to enjoy more spectacular Kubrick films like Paths of Glory and Barry Lyndon. With the Christmas season coming up, I was wondering if you've seen It's a Wonderful Life? It's not just a great Xmas movie, it's one of the greatest films of all time! Would love to see your reaction to that if you haven't seen it yet. I'm sure you would love it.
