Patreon changes for iOS users???
Added 2024-11-02 02:19:14 +0000 UTCSo this is not specifically a me thing, but a site wide change where I'm hearing that if you purchase a Patreon membership SPECIFICALLY through the iOS app, you get charged an extra 30% fee on it, which seems to purely go to Apple and no one else (Me OR Patreon).
It seems you will be fine if you did this before this month, but starting TODAY this change seems to go into effect.
As such, if you get your subscriptions through the iOS versions of this, please use either the desktop or android versions of it so that you aren't getting smacked with this unnecessary 30% charge. If that means you have to all-together cancel current or future subscriptions to me specifically as a result, I totally understand and would prefer you not get screwed over by whatever this weird change is.
Again, this is not JUST me, so I imagine this is spreading around a lot at the moment, but I felt the need to give a heads up on it just in case. ESPECIALLY watch out if you are on iOS and are subbed to multiple folks.

2024-11-02 11:52:07 +0000 UTCThis is, unfortunately, a common Apple issue - the tl;dr of it is that the App Store demands a cut of any in-app purchases, so any purchases made via an app from the app store comes with these extra charges. Companies also aren't transparent about it, because Apple's terms don't allow them to inform users that they can get around it by paying through locations other than the app store. Apple makes special deals with SOME companies with this kinda thing; my guess is Patreon probably had an agreement with them that's ended. I believe Youtube Premium and a few other subscription services have the same kinda issue. tl;dr, this is because of Apple's exceptionally crappy app store policy, and generally speaking if an app has in-app purchases, you're better off using the web browser version of any given site than the apple app! (I believe Youtube Premium is also grotesquely more expensive if you subscribe via the apple app instead of via web browser or android, among a few other services)
