"… So they really want me to join them."
Jeanne chuckled as she read the letter. It was easy to read why, Jeanne was the only Sword Master who reached God-Class except for her brother, Joseph Cavalieri.
"I guess they already have a sword for me."
Shana won't find her unless everything was prepared. Shana was the type of person who think ahead.
"I wonder how they will do that."
Jeanne found it funny. Of course she didn't have the intention of joining their organization. The whole world sees them as terrorists.
"That's the reason why they are in the Netherworld in the first place. Because they can't return to Thera."
She glanced at her ring finger, there was a ring there at one point. She could return as a Nightbreaker if she wanted to, but she decided to retire because she honored her last partner. Besides, she felt like no one could beat him in terms of talent.
"… Well, maybe Keenan can do it. After all, they both overcome a disintegration."
It said that people who overcome disintegration would gain a unique ability. Fo Keenan, perhaps it was the heightened senses and the ability to foresight the future for a second. And to be honest, Keenan's full ability was still unknown. Perhaps the disintegration has another secret for him.
"But in my case, or to be exact in his case. He can…"
She sighed, it was futile to recall the past that she could never bring back.
………
……
…
"I'm happy that you have a new Handler."
Leila came up and greeted him. Keenan smiled at her.
"Yeah, I just got lucky."
"I think it's greater than luck, you became the sword of the mysterious girl Fantasia. Do you know that students gossip about you guys?"
Leila pouted.
"I'm actually curious what Fantasia sees in you. We have the same limitation."
"Probably my pretty face."
"Fair enough… Wait a minute, are you perhaps her personal toy?"
Leila narrowed her eyes.
"You can see it like that."
Keenan didn't deny it. After all, Fantasia would make fun of him, threatening him that his paycheck would decrease. Although Keenan was at fault for that, because he made Fantasia mad.
"R- really?"
Leila glance at him with her cheeks blushing. Perhaps the cold Fantasia had a secret.
"Nah, I'm just joking."
"Tch."
She clicked her tongue.
"So how's your life?"
Keenan changed the topic. The last time he saw Leila was when he turned her down. Leila was crying at that time.
"The usual, I'm helping my parents in their pharmacy business. It was actually thriving."
"I'm happy for you."
"I'm happy for you too. I can't believe that we will graduate after this. Three years passed, huh. I feel like it was just yesterday…"
She recalled the past. Some of her classmates disappeared. Some discontinued their careers as Nightbreakers. While others died in the Netherworld, just like Keenan's teammate.
'I guess my decision to find another job is a blessing.'
She smiled, it wasn't bad. The only thing she regretted was that she didn't make a move on Keenan.
'Well, looks like he's happy with his current partner.'
She could see that Keenan was more active. He changed a lot, he was hotter, and he was not timid anymore.
She recalled when Keenan protected Carson against the third-year back when they were still freshmen, that was the exact moment she fell in love with Keenan. Despite being three years younger, he beat the crap out of the stinky third-year.
.........
......
...
The graduation arrived. It was the most exciting day for the third-year students. They could get their diplomas after this. Then, they could apply to Guilds or Clans that they wanted to join. Of course they could join the Government too.
Some of the students there were already contracted by the top Clans and Guilds. They were those who had promising talents.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Keenan and Fantasia were not part of that. They plan to stay as freelancers. Fantasia didn't need money so it was not a problem if she didn't join a Guild. In fact, it didn't even enter her mind. Fantasia was the type who don't like to be commanded. She preferred to do what she wanted. Being under a Guild would shackle her.
As for Keenan, he didn't want to work for any Guild or Clan. Especially when he already has a living ATM close to him. Besides, he wanted to stay lowkey. Guilds and Clans usually investigate their members. Keenan would be in danger once the fact that he worked part-time for the unknown organization would be found.
The graduation ceremony started. Students stood up with their graduation gowns and caps. Most of them were smiling, they accomplished something great in their lives. It was something they could be proud of.
They were in the open field and the cloudy sky could be seen. At the back, the parents and guardians of the students were watching. Some had cameras in their hands, they wanted to record this special moment for their children. Some parents cried, they were proud of their children.
Suzy and Jeanne were sitting next to each other, they met once when Suzy visited the hotel. To be fair, Suzy was sort of scared of Jeanne because she was had alcohol in her hand... Even now Jeanne was still holding a disguised bottle of mineral water(?).
Based on the red cheeks that Jeanne had, it seemed like she drank something heavy. She appeared to be holding her tears but she was drunk.
It was a happy moment for them, it was the start of the next stage of their lives.
However.
This moment would be painted by blood after a few minutes.
A rumble cracked in the sky. The cloud slowly dispersed till the sky became blue. The people felt the tremor from the sky.
It was confusing because the sky was clear yet a thunderous rumble echoed around.
Without further ado, the sky was torn apart the two worlds were connected again.
Just like the time when Keenan lost his parents.
It was a Rift Distortion.
