I could not recommend the movie Finding Forester enough. I feel it would be right up your alley. It’s a bit of a basketball movie but so so much more.

If you want to see an even BETTER basketball movie from the 90's, you gotta check out "He Got Game". It is sooooo good. It stars Denzel Washington, Ray Allen, Milla Jovovich, and Rosario Dawson.
