It's commonly regarded as the "season that saved Sentai" due to its hitting big after a number of seasons with declining ratings. It's also often pointed to as a great season to start on for new comers. This is my own theory, but I think it has a certain X-Men quality to it, at least in terms of characters. Red Hawk is totally a Cyclops, White Swan is Jean, Black Hawk is kind of a Wolverine/Gambit hybrid, and Ako here is more or less all of Wolverine's spunky teen girl sidekick characters like Kitty Pryde and Jubilee. (I've never been able to nail anything down for Yellow Owl, though. Beast, maybe? Raita seems a bit too goofy for him, though.) Anyway, this is all to say that Jetman is pretty awesome.
As a side note, though, dang Jet Swallow was hard to draw. I initially tried to be more true to the design from the show, but I quickly realized that what worked as a model/toy didn't quite work for what I was going. So I ended up referencing actual jet planes and bombers instead with a few tweaks to make it feel more Ako's ship.
