2020 Wrap Up!

Hey everyone-

2020 will soon be in the review mirror where it belongs! That being said, I feel very fortunate this year to have fostered this new little community through the Texturelabs channel, site, and of course Patreon Club! I hope you’re all wrapping up the year feeling positive, creative, and ready for whatever the future may hold…

It’s been a fun month here at the old Texturelab. I decided this month to let myself get a bit more ambitious with the tutorials, even of they took longer to create. So this month, just two new tutorials, but I tried to make them both pretty gnarly ones…

80 Ultra Chrome Text Effect

There are a decent amount of chrome tutorials on youtube, but I really wanted to throw my hat into the ring. The goal was to get a really over the top look out of Photoshop. Hope it’ll be a useful technique! Sidenote - check out https://www.instagram.com/chromeandlightning/ for some awesome 80s chrome inspiration…

Watercolor Effect

This one was super fun to develop. You can’t imagine how much I tweaked the settings and tried different things out. There’s actually a ton of chaotic awesome effects you can get out of this setup… it was difficult to settle on specific settings to use in the tutorial. If you end up building this effect, definitely try experimenting with those displace values, as well as the unsharp mask values.

New texture section

Textures>Sky>Stars

These turned out cool right? While the vast majority of the textures on the site are photographs, these images were actually created digitally… I hope that doesn’t spoil the galactic magic. I downloaded a bunch of Nasa imagery and tried to match the subtleties of the imperfections and lens artifacts. Hope they’ll come in handy! By the way, check out the Nasa site for some pretty awesome images: https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/index.html

In 2021….

I’ve got along lost of ideas - good ones, bad ones, strange ones. I’m excited to get not the new year and start cranking stuff out. By all means, if you have ideas or requests for textures or tutorials, hit me up! It’s always nice to get some outside inspiration, and my goal is to create content that will be useful to you and the entire design community.

Thank you for your continued support, and a Happy New Year to you!

Cheers,

Brady
