It's just that the anime could not adapt everything what is said in the light novel since it would take too much time so details like that are left only as an implication. In this series whenever the anime says that something happened off screen it actually is in the light novel and they just don't have enough time to put it into the show. (the source of this show is a light novel)

2024-10-22 17:26:10 +0000 UTCSo it isn’t really expanded upon well enough in the show, and I know you won’t see this until long after you’ve watched the next few episodes but it is kind of an important detail… great sage started utilizing the degenerate ability to organize Rimurus skills and create new ones in the cave, and whilst doing so, gave itself an upgrade of its own will when it heard Rimuru talking about how it could be better. Great Sage now has more processing power and works faster, because it *wanted* to help Rimuru. Also, the bat in the first cave with Veldora gave Rimuru the flight ability. Essentially he can stay airborne for a longer time per flap of wings based on the amount of magicules he has compared to his surroundings.
