Yeah this is a test. The dragons couldn't be sure if Gervic really is innocent yet.

It sounds to me like his only choice is to admit he was butt fucking himself with a hammer I wonder if this is a test though? I've seen this before in some shows, mostly animes, where they do this sort of thing and if they like fight back that's usually a sign of them being guilty iirc, because that usually means they are reacting to them being found out and kind of go with the whole not going down without a fight tactic But again Wrenn was shot so im not 100% how they would think Gervic got a hold of a gun.
