Regardless of the age of your child whether newborn or into extended breastfeeding ages a wide open mouth position helps to create a proper latch for optimal milk extraction from the breast. It also prevents pain and discomfort during feedings.
Gently brushing the newborns nose or chin with your nipple can help to prompt the baby to open wide before inserting the nipple into their mouth. This will help create a good latch. Once the nipple is inserted into the mouth the latch can also be fixed by gently inserting finger under the lip and gently turning it outward like “ducky lips” to ensure proper milk extraction and pain free feedings!
