TalKing of the Hill - Three Coaches and a Bobby

Football season is here (right?), making it the perfect time for a pigskin-based podcast! This time around, soccer threatens to usurp football in Arlen, leaving Bobby caught in a culture war battle between two different interpretations of masculinity. And because he's not incredibly famous yet, Will Ferrell is here! Will the answer be somewhere in the middle? Listen in to find out, and remember that salt tablets heal all wounds!

One joke interpretation note: I took the comment by Joseph that he’s going to get “headaches like his mom” was a reference to his mom saying she has headaches all the time to avoid having any IN QUOTES INTIMACY with Dale. It feels like an extremely deep joke about him hearing his mom saying, “not tonight, Dale. I have a headache” which works both as a runner on the Dale being cucked thread as well as a very King of the Hill clever riff on the the hoary ole sitcom trope of “THE WIFE WHO DOESN’T LIKE SEX.” Anyway, one man’s opinion!

This episode actually has one of my favorite bits of continuity in the show that I feel is very funny. Back at the end of Peggy the Boggle Champ when Peggy wins the Championship, the episode ends with Hank telling Peggy that he's going to do to her what Coach promised he'd do to the Football team if they made it to state followed by a passionate kiss to the credits. In this episode the first flashback Hank and the crew have of Sauers is the game that took them to State where he promises to kiss each and everyone of them on the mouth if they succeed, followed by the flashback ending with his passionate kiss with Bill. To me its really cool how the writing staff remembered this one off joke from S1 and decided to actually make it a real thing. Even telling my husband this on our rewatch really impressed him. It's small little things like that where the staff goes above and beyond that to me makes King of the Hill that much more funny and special.

I was very lucky as a Bobby-type kid to have a single working parent household. which meant there wasn't enough free time to enroll me in anything or afford anything like sports gear or instruments. I never once envied the kids who lost precious tv time to go to things like sports practice or rehearsals. and look at me now! animation podcast listener!

I'm paraphrasing what Alton Brown said one time, but vanilla is one of the most complex flavors in the world, made from the bud of an orchid that blooms once a year, and then has to be processed for months to get the flavor just right. Vanilla beans especially are super complex when you cook with them. I'm a huge vanilla apologist too! I like a scoop of vanilla, and then a scoop of a really good fruit sorbet like peach or raspberry, and then eating a little bit of both every spoonful so it makes a creamsicle in my mouth.
