Talking Simpsons - Saturdays of Thunder With Dan McCoy

As Homer once more fears he's a bad father, we welcome on the cohost of The Flop House Podcast/Emmy-winning writer, the fantastic Dan McCoy! We dig into this ep about soap box derby racing that features some of the funniest cutaways in the series, as well as references to some then-popular famous monsters. All that plus the tragic death of Scoey on this week's podcast!

Nice! Thanks for pushing those books

I'm sure you're right, Nina. It's just really funny to watch the two bits back to back and see how similarly they're staged/drawn. Oh, by way, I'm a K-8 Librarian and made sure to order sets of Sparks for the upcoming school year for each of the libraries I manage! I mentioned it to the kiddos and they're seemed excited.

I think it's just a trope and not a TNG reference/influence

This was an episode that I didn't recall being that funny but on rewatch, it had more funny moments than I thought. It does help that, as pointed out, quiet a bit was watching TV. On minor animation error I noticed when Homer is on the couch at the beginning watching TV and wearing his white shirt instead of usual polo, Homer's shoes are colored the same as the carpet, green, when he gets up to let Patty and Selma in. Minor but never noticed until this viewing.

Great episode, but I have to wonder if Nina or Kat Bailey mentioned that McBain's scream was framed a lot like an episode of Star Trek TNG, Heart of Glory, where Worf did the scream. I have no idea if TNG influenced McBain or if they were cribbing from the same trope. As much as the Simpsons ratings dropped with the Thrusday night move, one show did have to adjust. The previous season, The Flash originally aired from 8 to 9 but quickly moved to 8:30 so it wouldn't conflict I think. I can't recall any other hour long show that started on the half hour but I was so happy I didn't have to choose between the two.

I'm often amused by the changing architecture of the Simpson house, and to a lesser degree Springfield as a whole, during these early seasons. I should probably listen to the commentary on this one to see if it's mentioned, but in all of the interior garage shots in this episode there's a random staircase to no where in the background. It looks like they may have accidentally swapped in a basement background for the garage in places, or it was just something they didn't give any thought to and someone felt there should be stairs in there. I suppose they missed an opportunity to retcon it when they did that episode last season (two seasons ago?) that took place in a tiny crawlspace above the garage, though I'm pretty sure future scenes set in the garage have not included this mystery set of stairs.

Kind of a forgettable ep for season 3, feels more like a season 2 at points.

I have a photo of my dad holding me as a baby in one arm and holding up a copy of "Fatherhood" in his opposite hand with a big grin on his face and, complicated feelings about my dad aside, it used to always make me smile, but now it just seems sad and icky. I wonder how many other cherished family photos are now ruined in a similar manner?

Maybe it's an unrealistic expectation born of Hey Arnold! aping Grand Prix for a similar episode (a crazy pull I only recognized because of my dad's film tastes), but I was always surprised they didn't lean into a specific racing movie for the plot of this and just went with seemingly generic beats. I think that's why the incredible McBain moment ends up outshining the rest of the episode.

Maybe not on topic but Kansas, my home, just defended the right to abortion in its state constitution. Ohio may be fallen, but the Free State lives to fight another day!

The way Doctor Nick pronounced Edgar Allan Poe as edgarALLANpoe always stuck with me and I continue to pronounce it that way to this day. Comes up more often than you think.

Love Dan, so this was a fun episode. Now just one Elliott (or possibly Hallie Haglund) away from collecting a full set of Flophouse hosts! As for the episode itself, as season 3 goes, this one's not quite a classic, but it's still got some memorable bits, especially the McBain parody. Stray observations from a re-watch: Patty rejects a potential hairstyle as "butch," a potential follow-up on the runner started in Principal Charming that continues through season 4, then gets forgotten about until Al Jean comes back and re-watches for the commentaries.
