Talking Simpsons - Sweets And Sour Marge With Libby Watson

This week we're joined once again by awesome journalist Libby Watson from the fantastic Sick Note newsletter, to help us dive into the complex politics of unhealthy food. After some fun with world records, Springfield learns they are the fattest town around, which leads Marge to a quest for justice. Can she fix things within the system, or will the evil billionaires win? All that, plus a bunch of funny jokes about candy in this week's girthy podcast!

My wife's grandmother was at the time of her graduation the tallest woman to ever matriculate her high school at a statuesque 5'9". The tallest man? It was indeed Robert Wadlow, who graduated two years earlier in 1936 from their tiny school near St. Louis, MO. She described the sound of his footsteps as seeming like thunderclaps. She died two years ago at the age of 100. Sadly, Robert would only survive to 22. I don't know if she still holds the record for the tallest woman at Alton High, but I was always more of an Uncle John's Bathroom Reader than a Guinness World's Records guy. PS: I know the last time we were on this plane I had a mental break, but since the topic of weight and weight loss keeps coming up on the show I'd strongly encourage you guys to check out the Maintenance Phase podcast. I know you mean well, but there's just a lot of bad info that gets repeated. I swear this time there really is a man on the wing of the plane!

The advice to get into the Guinness Book of World Records via a group attempt is solid advice! I am part of a group that got entered on May 2nd of this year for setting the record for the most people launching confetti cannons simultaneously with 676 cannons. The representatives from Guinness were very strict and thorough with their counts and rules but overall it was a really fun experience! (Our attempt was done indoors so there was no littering involved)

Just wanted to plug Ben Stiller's more recent things, since I didn't hear them mentioned in the episode. He seems to have 'reinvented' himself as a prestige TV director/producer in recent years. Escape at Dannemora (Showtime) and more recently Severance (Apple TV+) are both excellent.

A thing about the third act that I can't just let go: why do they need to go anywhere when Springfield must be within driving distance of any number of other towns where sugar is not banned? Like, I don't think any business in my current city sells root beer, but I can absolutely visit another city and bring it home.Considering how quickly Homer's caper wraps up, they could have just had him make a Smokey & the Bandit run to Shelbyville or wherever.

1. Russell Crowe won the Oscar the previous year for “Gladiator”. Denzel Washington won for “Training Day.” 2. “Norbit” was nominated for Best Makeup but lost to “La Vie En Rose” (I hope no one was fired for those blunders)

I miss the old Guinness Book of World Records. When they started selling world records to companies for marketing purposes and the entire games industry responded with "I'll take 2000", the child in me died a little.

I always interpreted the joke of “change my name back to hitler” as his actual family name is hitler and not just sarcasm

Great episode! Also apparently your Patreon is where I come to deposit trivia that I have no other use for so here I go. Randomly, the actress Alicia Witt (from Cybill and Twin Peaks and Urban Legend) is the daughter of the record holder for longest hair for the time period you two and I would have been little nerds reading the Guinness Book of World Records. You might remember the picture a woman standing on the second floor balcony of a house with her hair hanging down to touch the floor. And that is just random, but it is even weirder because people only made this connection after their was this news story about Alicia Witt's parents dying under quasi weird circumstances, and shortly into the news cycle, people were like "oh wait, the hair lady?" So I guess what I'm trying to say is that they're a super interesting family with a lot going on.

My favorite thing about the death of print media and the advent of SEO is how "Did the Simpsons Predict the Future?" replaced "Homer's Odyssey" as the go-to hacky article title. Regarding the sugar/hyperactivity myth, one of my best friends growing up was infamous for downing a ton of sugar each day after school and immediately "getting hyper." It was truly impressive—like she would literally eat sugar straight out of the bag if we didn't have candy around. It turns out she had undiagnosed Type 1diabetes and the sugar binging and subsequent bouncing off the walls was just her body desperately trying to find homeostasis. (I believe she's fine now, thankfully!) (Thanks for another great episode! Libby is such a delight.)

Speaking of soda.... https://nypost.com/2022/06/16/i-drank-30-cans-of-pepsi-a-day-for-20-years-for-8-6k-a-year/?utm_source=url_sitebuttons&utm_medium=site%20buttons&utm_campaign=site%20buttons ...how he isn't diabetic is a nuts.

You will indeed look like a fool, lol. Best to finish listening to the podcast before making comments in some cases 😘 - Henry

I bought some of that Monster Mash cereal as well. Hadn't eaten sugary cereal in over a decade so that was a shock.

I haven't gotten to this point in the podcast yet, so I may look like a fool later but I'll post this for now. While it's not mentioned in the Wikipedia page for the episode, the way Homer catches a limb after falling off of the human pyramid and then pulls himself up, including the specific staging, and the music, HAS to be a reference to the opening mountain climbing sequence from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yx4nyKDCNc
