What A Cartoon! - Transformers: Beast Wars "Code of Hero"
Added 2022-07-04 04:00:02 +0000 UTC
Listeners, maximize! Yes, it's time for us to chat about the mid-'90s Transformers series as chosen by our premium patron Devin! On this semi-sequel to our Reboot podcast, learn how the Autobots became Maximals via a Vancouver-based animation studio, as well as how this sequel/prequel was more than meets the eye. Then we dive deep into the most celebrated episode of the show that immortalized Dinobot. Now, let the battle be joined!
I only have vague memories of watching this in reruns on YTV as a kid, so this was essentially new to me when revisiting it for WAC, and I immediately wondered if it was the ReBoot people because of how it looks. Obviously, the CGI is dated and not *great,* but I'd be lying if I said it didn't have a nice comfy feel to it that helped me enjoy watching this episode a fair bit. In particular, those monkeys/pre-humans looked INCREDIBLE and I was laughing pretty much whenever they were in the episode. I'm half tempted to give the show a watch through even though I'm an extremely casual Transformers fan. Hell, since it's on YouTube, I may as well just do it sometime when I don't know what to watch.

I somewhat missed the original Transformers show in the 80s. The Real Ghostbusters was the first action cartoon I really got into that was all about an accompanying toyline while Transformers, Masters of the Universe, and a few others were shows I watched here and there, had a toy or two, but never was obsessive about. I did take-in the Generation 2 stuff in the early 90s, but the premise of the show always felt thin to me and it was the most blatant of the "Toy commercials masquerading as entertainment" franchises out there. Beast Wars, on the other hand, was far better at creating actual entertainment and a lot of that has to do with the show being able to start fresh. There is no cramming of two, different, toy lines together so you don't have bots that transform into jets and tanks fighting with or against ones that just turn into a gun or a boom box. The CG is just rough, even by the standards of the day it was shown, which is something Beast Machines rectified a bit. I never got full into either series and did not dabble at all in the toy lines then or now, but at least it's something I think the people who worked on it can be proud of and I'd much prefer to watch it over any of the movies or the classic show. I have heard good things about some of the Netflix shows, but I've never sat down and watched any of them to form an opinion.

It was just the opposite in my area. It was a lunchtime show for seasons 2 and 3, and then it moved to an afternoon slot the following year (when it was reruns of season 3 plus 3 new episodes).

A bit of info official Transformers Hall of Fame was created by Hasbro and Dinobot was the 5th to be put into it. It was in 2010 right after the 4 most will know ones.

Never was into this as a kid, I always saw it as the "oh my younger cousins are into this..I'm a big boy and I watch Digimon" but still very interesting and entertaining episode!!

The movie did not help the original cartoon but what really kill it they move it from a weekday afternoon show to weekday morning show in most places right after the movie. G2 was some episodes of the show with a cgi box toys and a marvel comics they kill more then the movie.

You know, we had a lot of fun tonight. But there's nothing funny about... stasis lock. It's the third most common cause of deactivation. So please, take care of your Transformer and get it checked! I'm Bob Forward.

After listening to this I saw that Ian James Corlett is going to be at a comic convention near me this weekend. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend

This is the only piece of media to ever make me cry. I remember being mercilessly mocked by my family for crying when Dinobot died but it was real to me, damn it!
My personal favourite episode of Beasties was the episode where Rhinox is converted to the Predacons for a bit. The plan backfires substantially because Rhinox is much more intelligent than the Predicons and he spends the episode absolutely trolling them.

Had to pause the episode 5 minutes in to give Devin credit for referencing Snit! Just hearing that name was a shot of pure unadulterated nostalgia :P

Would be awesome if more people could get a chance at the Montgomery Burn's Patreon level.
Devon still picking out some excellent underated choices. π

Pedantic C&H fan logging in to say Calvin doesn't think T-rexes in F-14s is too stupid. He says "This is SO cool!" and Hobbes says "This is SO stupid." I'm only correcting because I love their opposing reactions, and I think about that strip every single time I see something that makes me think, "well this is dumb but it's doing its thing very well so I'm sure someone out there loves it." Especially when it seems like the creator had fun.
