TalKing of the Hill - Three Days of the Kahndo

This month, the Hills and the Souphanousinphones take a trip south of the border in the first truly international episode of King of the Hill. But their innocent quest to obtain the fireworks, illegal makeups, and papier-mâché that Mexico has to offer soon turns dangerous when a mitad mishap causes Hank, Dale, and Kahn to be stranded outside of the USA. Will the trio escape before they're arrested and forced to subsist on moldy bread and non-distilled water? Listen in to find out and hear important facts about NAFTA!

Good Mexican restaurant recommendations in Vancouver area: Guacamole Mexican Grill in Surrey and Taqueria Playa Tropical in New West. Probably still nowhere close to what you can get in Cali but they’re the best I’ve found so far 🇲🇽 There’s also Gringos in Van which is more for the atmosphere and experience than the food

Late to the party here, but I highly recommend you guys check out Candice Millard's book "Destiny of the Republic" to learn about James Garfield. He was one of the few genuinely good people to be elected president, so of course he was assassinated almost immediately and died the most horrific death out of any of them.

I'm glad you guys touched on the provenance of "Hey Mickey". As a hardcore nerd and novelty music fan, it falls into one of my favorite niches: covers you didn't know were covers/exceeded the original. I think the exemplar in that category goes to fellow 80s pop alumnus Cyndi Lauper and her hit girl power anthem "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Maybe not technically a cover, since Robert Hazard sold his demo rather than releasing a cut, what makes that a fun one is that it was never intended to be written for a female lead. The song as sung by Hazard was about a Lothario excusing his wonton ways to his parents by blaming the women he got on with. Cyndi barely changed a thing in her version, but just by gender swapping the lead, it became a song about young women breaking free of patriarchal expectation and living their best lives. Great ep as always. Glad we get KotH on the reg now too.

Also Henry’s confidence at listing presidents from FDR and then immediate failure is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.

About people going to Mexico and going to the Senor frog, a few years ago I went to Colombia to do a tour. One of our stops was Cartagena, a beach town where a lot of cruise ships come in. We got there in the middle of the week and it was not very busy. One thing I saw there was a Hard Rock Cafe. I just cannot honestly imagine going all the way to Colombia, where there is so much to see and do and eat and going to the Hard Rock Cafe. Then the weekend came and the cruise ships came into port and that city changed dramatically. Every 5 feet you were stopped by a vendor, everyone in the city switched from Spanish to English, and prices went up. That just made me never want to go on a cruise ship and made me feel awful to be the American tourist. You guys are right, people only want to see comfort in a different location, with the locals being subservient to them.

DegreeS!

The irony of Bob saying “even wronger” when talking about Peggy miscorrecting someone. That poor English degree going to waste. 🥲

I could be wrong. But the factories that came to Mexico during NAFTA had connections to the mass murders of women working the factories brought over during this period. Also the Zapatista uprising was in response to Carlos salinas de Gortari and NAFTA.

Bob as a soon to be Canadian, you should know the most noteworthy thing from Nagano was it was the first year NHL players completed in the Olympics and Canada lost in the semi finals against the Czech Republic in a shootout and the head coach decided to not have Wayne Gretzky take one of the shots.
