What A Cartoon Movie! - Cool World

Starting with Fritz the Cat, Ralph Bakshi made quite a name for himself as an underground animation director—and it all ended nearly 30 years ago with his infamous flop, Cool World. This live-action/animation hybrid aspired to be an R-rated Roger Rabbit, but came into being with an undercooked plot, surprisingly shoddy animation, and weak special effects. Listen in as animation historian Thad Komorowski (of the Cartoon Logic podcast) joins us in the first half to discuss the career of Ralph Bakshi, then stay tuned as we fully dissect every minute of this cinematic mess. You'll never know the difference between a noid and a doodle without this very important podcast!

What A Cartoon Movie! - Cool World

Holli Would and Lonette are, to me, hotter than Jessica Rabbit. As an adult, I can now see how hot Brad Pitt was then (I didn't find him sexy when I was 13). One of my fav trash movies. I rarely meet ppl who have seen this film, so I'm excited to see other ppl discussing it, even in a negative way

I remember this ad in the back of Marvel comics at the time. It was effective, i did WANT to see it (for horny child reasons) but i never got around to it. Seems like that was for the best.

So, I haven't seen this movie since I was 12 and it was one of those 90s movies I was thinking about looking up and rewatching. But then I listened to this podcast, so now I don't have to. Dodged a bullet there. Thanks, guys! You do great work!

I feel like Bakshi could have benefited from some focusyn while making this movie...

Really enjoyed this episode! I'd never even heard of Cool World beforehand (was it ever even properly released in the UK?), but checking out clips on YouTube, it seems to have the same incoherent, yet mesmerising grotesqueness of the recent 'Cats' movie. Also, a reply Bob made to one of my Tweets about this made me realise I've been mixing up my Bakshis and Bluths all these years...

I knew about it, it just didn't seem worth bringing up. - Bob

I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention the controversial advertising campaign involving the giant Holli on the Hollywood sign.

Everytime you guys mention Holly dancing on screen I just hear the sea captain going "Yar, she'll be dancin for hours".

What an irritating journey ( the movie, not the podcast) I first heard of Cool World by seeing a few screenshots of the SNES game while perusing my older brother’s Nintendo Power Magazines as a kid. I was slightly intrigued but never followed up. Years later when Rotten Tomatoes was a new thing I remember seeing it’s page while looking for movies with 0% scores. Of course that made me want to see it more than ever which I of course regretted upon actually watching the film. ANYWAY here’s my pitch for Cool World 2: a suicidal comic book fan with a crush on Holli Would learns of the inexplicably stupid rule for becoming a doodle and desperately tries to find a doodle to kill him so he can live out his days as an annoying cartoon character in his cardboard cutout dreamscape.

I think Cool World is my least favorite Bakshi. Of course Roger Rabbit is the best version of this kind of movie, but honestly I think even Monkeybone is a more successful (at least in execution if not financially) version of Cool World. There are a lot of similarities, and it is so much more watchable.

This movie is just... baffling. It wants so hard to be a more "adult" Roger Rabbit but it fails in every respect and doesn't even work on its own merit. Until like 2015 my ONLY frame of reference for this movie was ads on the back of old comic books, and then I watched it for another podcast at the time, and just... my god I was disgusted, confused, and bored. Unlike with what's still probably the worst movie you guys have covered (Space Jam), I did actually revisit this one for WAC, and my feelings are still pretty much the same. This movie belongs in horny jail forever, and I feel bad for Kim Basinger.

A few years ago I was really obsessed with David Bowie consumed everything he was involved in. So naturally I watched cool world, and forced my two close friends to watch it with me, and I gotta tell you... I remember 0% of this movie. Only the ending and that’s it. And I barley remember that. I must’ve blacked this movie from my memory. Calling Real Cool Word Bowie’s grand return really shocked me because I never considered it like that. For about four years before the movie came out Bowie was releasing (bad) music as Tin Machine, so I guess it was his return to using the Bowie name. To be honest maybe I only like Real Cool World because it’s NOT Tin Machine, because it’s mostly crappy hard rock.

Maybe the Doodles don't have genitals? And that's why they can't have sex?
