You guys really hit it on the head with this one, it's (at least) 3 different episodes smooshed into one. Some of it is great and funny, some of it is middling, and some of it just makes no sense, but it's certainly not boring because of all the ideas being flung around. Don Cheadle is GREAT in the episode and I wish he had a bigger role so we could hear more of him as that character. -- Side note, I completed my Masters' degree in Communication & Media Studies back in April/May, so oof that joke late in the episode was a gut punch

This episode is where I can pinpoint the moment where the Simpsons itself had slipped in quality, instead of some individual episodes being "meh". The whole lack of respect for continuity with Dean Peterson really ground my gears. As the first song to appear after the second Simpsons album, Testify didn't feel like an instant classic like so many of the older songs. Overall, I still like the episode and the jokes were funny, but you may have hit the nail on the head that having to compete against South Park and Family Guy hurt the show. Two things about Lubchenko. 1) Communications being a major always puzzled me; I always pictured Uhura opening hailing frequencies. 2) Lubchenko is not really a Russian name, but more likely Ukranian. Russian male surnames usually end with a v or n or ee sound and rarely if ever end in an o sound (which usually denotes a neuter gendered noun)
