What A Cartoon! - Cybersix "Mysterious Shadow" With Special Guest Sfé R. Monster
Added 2019-09-23 04:00:00 +0000 UTC
Just in time for Cybersix's 20th anniversary, we celebrate this Tokyo-Vancouver collaboration with special guest, comic writer/artist/editor Sfé R. Monster! We discuss the show's complex creation, the amazing TMS animation, and the queer and trans narratives Cybersix spoke to! So listen as we analyze the first episode and the impact it has had since!
Also, Sfé's commentary on the non-tragic nature of the trans narrative (intentional or not) is spot on. That's refreshing even today.

Cybersix was extremely formative for me, a gay little eleven year old

I'd never seen, or even heard of this show, until you guys put out September's schedule, despite being a Canadian. Admittedly, I was 3 in 1999 so I was definitely not the target demographic for this and its quick cancellation would explain why I didn't see reruns much (if at all) growing up. I wish it had went on longer because it's a pretty gorgeous show, seems to have some really interesting lore, and I'm genuinely shocked that it has a good portrayal of an ostensibly transgender/gender queer character (even if they don't outright say it).

From what Henry said about the source material, I'm glad the adaptation cleaned a lot of it up and removed some of the unnecessary "edge" that plagues a lot of comic books, especially of the 1990s. I wish more adaptations would do that, or at least people would stop revering books with that kind of content. Clean-up work like that is really necessary for stuff like "The Killing Joke" and yet the movie somehow made it more misogynistic than the original. From what I've heard, Amazon's adaptation of THE BOYS does a decent job of that, but I'm too sick of Garth Ennis, his hatred of superheroes, and rape in comic stuff to check it out for myself at this point.

Each episode cost over $360,000 and that's with Japanese anime money. No wonder it got cancelled so quickly, we brats were too young for it!
I do remember this show airing alongside the tv show "the Magician", but the only episode was about how the macguffin of the episode was an "anecdote" compare to "antidote". Or that was chalked up to lazy closed caption people (another bizarre case).
