You asked what happened to Monica when she went through the barrier and remember Darcy said her lab results showed that she'd gone through the barrier 2x already and it changed her cells on a molecular level, so Darcy highly advised her not to try to through a 3rd time. That's why she came up with the vehicle that was specced to try to shield her from the effects of the barrier. As you see, it did not work. So, now she's changed. She's what's considered a "mutate" in the comics in that it's a person who was born a regular human but then gets changed by some external factor, like Spider-Man. "Mutants" are born different, mutates are changed people.
