2024-09-26 20:39:11 +0000 UTCWell, this is obviously going to be subjective, and it’s hard for me to go into detail about it at this point in the story, but personally, I don’t find “revenge story but has friends” to be an overly complex motivation. Though in truth, Kishimoto is not known for his character depth. So while I wouldn’t necessarily agree he’s the most complex (it’s hard not to see him overshadowed by Itachi at every turn for example, or hell, Gaara for that matter), even if he were, that doesn’t make him a complex character in a vacuum. I mean, Kishimoto meant to make this a baseball shonen. He only even added Sasuke because he was told to do so since rival characters were popular in shonen at the time, then immediately added the kiss bc he knew people would ship the MCs in yaoi fanfic. The character was an afterthought and immediately used as fanservice. Really not getting off to the best start, in truth Having said that, I can see your point coming into full view further down the line in Shippuden, certainly. At the moment however, his entire character is “I’m brooding and want revenge and power, but I secretly like friends.” Outside squad 7, he doesn’t even have any other connections to the village. That is the entire scope of what his character encompasses rn. Frankly, I was impressed when he interacted with rock Lee in the chunin exams, because outside of that, he barely does anything else with anybody in the Leaf. Honestly though, people go back and forth about this kind of stuff to this day, so I suppose the argument could be made that generating discourse for decades is in itself a kind of depth, although comic fans do have a tendency to do this in general to be fair haha Ultimately I suppose what it comes down to at this point is “agree to disagree.” Though as I said, I can see merit to your argument down the line for sure

2024-09-26 18:43:38 +0000 UTCIt's very subtle but in that final blow exchange, you see Sasuke switch from a piercing attack to punching Naruto at the last moment which shows that he had decided against killing Naruto. Details like that are why it's one of my favorite fights in the series.

Fantastic reactions fellas, I knew they would be haha Interestingly, Hus’ take here, “Naruto held back,” is a pretty consistently common one amongst the greater community. People go back and forth about this to this day, so ultimately it will be up to y’all to decide. Sad to see some more character depth and growth from Sasuke right at the tail end here. He tends to be a fairly one-dimensional character for the most part, so it would’ve been nice to see more of this before he exits stage left. But that’s the way life goes, I suppose
