Cutting nothing is basically making your sword blunt so you don't cut things you don't want to cut. Cutting anything is the opposite, making it sharp enough to cut even steel. If you got enough control to make the blade harmless, you got the skill to make it deadly enough to cut steel.

When Zoro has his sword monologues, he often mentions things from esoteric eastern spiritual ideas. This is a trope common in Japanese media, where a person who masters sword arts seeks enlightenment through their weapon, and who will often also be versed in ideas and metaphors that are Hindu/Buddhist in origin which historically found their way to Japan. The foundations for this trope can be found in the treatise "The Unfettered Mind"(also known as "Immovable Wisdom") written by Zen Buddhist monk Takuan Soho. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unfettered_Mind

The name of Zoro's attack is Lion Song by the way, not Lion Strike. It's one of his most famous moves, so if the translation keeps fucking it up (like calling "nakama" friend still), it's good to keep in mind.

I always interpreted "Hear the rhythm" as a nod to string theory or spirituality in regards to how every material has its own vibrations. If you know the vibration, you can cut through it. Glad to finally have the clarification that it's actually a reference to the Cha-Cha Slide!
