WIND BREAKER: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*STYLISH HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

The main event is here: Choji vs. Umemiya and it is a literally "blood bath," but in no way the way I was anticipating how this episode handled the battle! I am more intrigued by Umemiya than ever and Choji broke my heart -- so much good symbolism and thematic elements of this episode! Let's chat about it!

WIND BREAKER: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Hey, you never have to apologize for commenting late! 😀I’m always happy to get them regardless! Umemiya is such a natural choice for the thumbnail, right? I love the OST in this series! Oohhhh, the idea that the bloody hands are tied with the broken glass?! WILD. I had not made that connection! Umemiya is really just a tank, too! It’s wild to see someone so….well…not tanky, be tanky! Stable is a great way to describe it - and yeah, that hair? Woof, he looked AMAZING! Meanwhile, Choji is the rabbit from Monty Python’s Holy Grail hahaa! You know it’s a GOOD episode when you can make a drinking game from how many times I say “oh my god,” hahaha! Togame was so sad and the puppy/TURTLE AHHAHA Eyes were so pitiful! He deserved head pats! Great callback about the line to “smile!” Yes! I loved the glass world scene - it’s so gorgeous! The way the lighting was with Choji and Togame?! SO GOOD. It was so intimate and beautiful; one of my favorite scenes of the season so far, as well! I love that Choji recognized that he had contributed to the madness as well! The writing there was wonderful! I like the ED and ohhhh, adding the Togame and Choji image is neat! Thanks for pointing that out! Also, yes, Sakura needs hobbies! 😛And yes, we learned a lot more about the antagonists in this arc, but considering we’re with Bofurin for most of the series, I’m assuming, it makes sense that we will learn about them as a slow drip! 😛Also, yesss, the Idiot Sandwich Meme works so gooooood! Thank you for the comment! This series was so much fun and I’ve enjoyed it so far - onwards to the next episode!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words - sorry it’s taken so long to get to this comment! And yessss, the characters in an anime are GETTING THERAPY! It’s a Christmas miracle! The OST for this series is so good! For the “Awards” this year, I’m not including any new shows or current ones on the channel, but Wind Breaker will DEFINITELY be involved in the following year’s for sure! Sugi’s “tiny contribution!” Bless him! Gordon Ramsey would be doing the “idiot sandwich” treatment to a lot of these characters! 😛 And yes, these characters need hobbies! Choji’s crash out is so sad! The visual symbolism, though, was GORGEOUS throughout. The Natsume comparison and all the characters going through the wringer this episode…your description is so spot on! Loved the work with Choji and Umemiya in this! And yessss, choosing a thumbnail is a struggle for this series! Thank you for the comment!

sorry I was going through it this week lol Thank you for the reaction and Merry Christmas!! 10/10 thumbnail and umemiya knows it Suo is so graceful that i just kept forgetting his depth perception is different due to the eyepatch the lack of ost at the start was cool since it made me focus on all the hits and emphasized the broken buzz in choji's head the bloody hands - at first it's like he's bloodied his hands with the fighting and it's scary, but then it becomes sad when it's linked to the broken glass later on and the team he broke with his own hands... the depression is so real... choji fought dirty with that coat grab but maybe he just wanted to have umemiya down at his height level lmfao meanwhile umemiya is so stable. both as a tank and also just in the fight itself. he took a bunch of hits but never seemed to lose control umemiya has no right to look that good!! his hair down on his face, the blood, the way he looks at you (choji) damn... that bite takes bloodthirsty to another level! Drinking game: how many times in this arc has Romania said "oh my god" the part with the warmth around his ear was so sweet but it was funny how it went from "aww a hug" to HEADBUTT - but I had the same expectation of a hug when I first saw that scene the OST was so good... when choji passed out, the singer sung "here come the bright skies" and then the next shot in the anime was the blue sky of choji's past... that part where he goes "Kame-chan" and then it all goes silent was so abrupt i love it... togame this whole time had the saddest puppy/turtle eyes... that part where choji told togame to smile was very touching! it's a callback to when choji turned "dark" and togame told choji that he'll do the skinning and asked choji to keep smiling instead... that part where they faced each other in that world of glass was so beautiful too. it was one of my favorite shots of this season honestly. choji's close look at togame's expression, "thank you for protecting me", the soft touch on togame's face was so tender... (as you know I spammed the discord channel with togachoji art 😅) it was good that togame recognized that he was an enabler but I especially liked that choji also acknowledged that he was the one who started this whole mess in the first place and broke it himself... that togame was just trying to keep it together and safe for him... i liked that the part where choji's eyes lightened up wasn't some dramatic moment but rather a soft and quiet realization as he faced togame... the part when he finally started looking at how others must've felt, the "it must've hurt, it must've been tough, i'm sorry, sorry, i'm so sorry" made me tear up! umemiya: planting the seeds of ships and cultivating them lol and of course, taking in shishitoren is such a hassle so let's be friends instead! the crowd mirrors us with the utter confusion on how this whole intense tournament arc just ended like a happy little get-together lol for the ED it's interesting, they added the togachoji image in this ep i think. It wasn't in the ED of the previous episodes. I guess they are friends now so they earned the appearance rights for the ED LOL Sakura oh nooo you need hobbies too umemiya is a mysterious guy... it's interesting that we are 9 episodes in but I feel like we know more about shishitoren members than bofurin members lol choji felt empty but associated it with not having fun and his idea of fun was fighting strong guys. so the stake for choji was to not feel more empty - but as seen later in the ep, he wasn't even sure if winning fights would actually solve anything, it was just all he knew to try doing. power gives you the mean to do things, but choji didn't seem to have a goal so the power went to naught. yeah gojo and umemiya look similar with the white hair and blue eyes and both have a status of being "the strong one", but umemiya feels more "solid" and "brotherly" to me so his voice tends to be lower. it's interesting that what started as a physical fight ended up being solved through mental understandings. and i like the discussion on what choji was after did not actually exist but they were mental constructs that he set himself, and the conflicts he had were all mental barriers. and how by elevating himself based on his own idea of being the leader and being strong, choji had pushed everyone away instead unlike umemiya I like the discussion of umemiya being an outsider so not having personal stake to choji, which allows him to do things that togame wouldn't be able to do. togame being so empathic... it must've been tough for him indeed when he took on the responsibility of "skinning" the weak... Umemiya the councilor... I like that he acknowledged that he pushed choji into a corner and apologized for it, but it didn't mean he was going to give up on his goal to "converse" with him. and the way he was evaluating choji and thinking on how to get through with him... LMFAO THE IDIOT SANDWICH MEME IS SO TRUE the previous shishifurin fight: hehe the current shishifurin fight: not hehe the togachoji ship is so real, umemiya the relationship councilor, bringing togachoji from their unhealthy codependence back to the light. with the ost and additional voice acting, it just amps it up even more... umemiya getting the first row seats to all that drama in shishitoren: i dont want to deal with this in my team lol /j

Loved the reaction and discussion! What a wonderful episode for playing around with expectations! And love to see people get some therapy of a kind, too. 😆 Various things I loved: The sound design overall but especially in the beginning where all we hear is the fight; the OST continues to be amazing, as well. Sakura literally going: ”What is the meaning of this?!” Just so funny to me. 🤣 Sugi’s tiny contribution 🥰 Choji getting the ‘idiot sandwich’ treatment 😆 The love for Ume’s hair in this episode “Do we have hobbies? Oh no, we don’t have hobbies!” 🤣 Choji’s crash out is consistently painful for me to watch – like someone suddenly waking up to the fact that what they have been feeling this whole time was just anguish. Going from that empty dark space or desert to the scream filtering back in was so effective. A great illustration of Choji going from numbness to an awareness of his pain and I think the pain he has caused, as well. I know the Natsume comparison came up in the very first episode (which was amazing and I got very excited about it! 🥰), but I really wanted to wait until this episode to gush about this! Especially in these few episodes I see it in the way we witness our understanding of the situation develop layer by layer from different perspectives. We got: what Sakura learned having had no real context previously; Togame who worked to admit (to himself as much as to anyone else) what actually happened and what should have happened; Ume who saw Shishitoren shift and wanted to discover why himself but more than that guide that understanding in Choji; Choji, who was in the middle of it all, experiencing a total collapse of the self. I think this episode is a great example of what can happen when we cannot identify or articulate how we feel, when we don’t have the words for it. The focus on internality in Natsume is one of my favourite elements of its writing (and the discussion which follow as a result) and I love seeing this kind of approach in Wind Breaker, as well. 🥰 Also, the way there is such strong focus on the aspects of a “voice” as a catalyst for one’s identity, through: Togame’s focus on having (or not) a voice, Sakura’s determination to not waver from expressing his voice, Choji’s literal attempt to bite out Ume’s “voice” to make him shut up… Just such beautiful construction and progression, I cannot deal! Really wonderful and empathetic discussion for Choji and Ume’s approach. Loved seeing the struggle of choosing a thumbnail, too, there are so many worthy frames! 😆 Cannot wait for next week! 🌸
