I had NO idea what to expect with this movie but a "live action anime" was the least on my list but the MOST welcome! This movie is so funny, so wild, and so fun -- it's best to just witness and ask questions later! I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did! Thank you, Sunspots, for such a fun entry to help round out the year!!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the reaction and discussion – yessss, a preamble to Januyaoi? What more could I ask for?! “Beautiful absurdity” is such a good description for this movie and yes, the pace leaves you almost breathless! Rei is SUCH a force! The enemies to lover ship gets me so good in this! The Duke being Sephiroth and David Bowie’s love child should have been the foreshadowing of him being Rei’s father, in all honesty. I was *obsessed* with the costuming and set design for this film - there’s so much in every frame that you could stop and look at each second! I usually dislike live action adaptations of manga or anime because it fails to capture the “vibe” of the series, but this is a major exception! The acting was sooooo good! The themes of resistance are EVERYWHERE in this! And honestly…if a few posters could alter a political landscape like it does here? The world would be better, indeed! Yes – cinema! 😆 Also, a sneaky little preamble to Januyaoi maybe… So happy to see what a great ride you had with this film! 🥰 The first time I watched it I had no idea what I was getting into, as well, I didn’t even eat the snacks I’d prepared I was so engrossed with all the beautiful absurdity! 😆 It felt like there was no time to breathe. Various things I loved: First sight of Rei: “hot pirate looking vampire” 😆 Every new person entering a scene is just us waiting to see what sort of visual insanity are we gonna get! The Duke being David Bowie and Sephiroth’s lovechild GACKT as Hua Cheng?! I see it. Think you can have a scene with no craziness?! No, actually… Saitamalaria 😆 I had the immediate impulse to do the Saitama sign every time, too Rei/Akutsu true enemies to lovers ship. Also need a spin-off of the love-story between the Duke’s lieutenants Just the care they clearly put into the set design and costuming! Most of all – this is the kind of live action adaptation I really appreciate, where the vibes of the manga are kept and the campiness of anime is also transferred so well. Everyone’s performances were just perfect. It is so wonderful to see such talented (and very serious and prolific) performers bring their absolute A-game to a work like this. 🥰 Now themes of resistance?! 😆 I mean, there’s a whole revolution, a liberation front, etcetc. Most importantly, I love this fun take on a kind of satirical resistance, with comedy and absurdity being used to undercut prejudice. Also, wouldn’t it be nice if a few A4 posters could take down a whole corrupt regime? What a world that would be. Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Honestly, all the films this year were golden and this was no exception; this was such a fun commission - Sunspots hit it out of the park, for sure! I love the way the movie approached the content and the style – yeeeepppp East Coast vs. West Coast in the U.S. — meanwhile, in the Midwest, haha!! I love the “urban legend” aspect of it and how it was presented as a narrative tool. And the family just casually accepting this BL? Yes, please! I had no clue about this mangaka, but their style is very 70s/80’s anime, which I love – The entire part with the “academy” was hilarious! And I love Momomi just being the extra diva that they are - they fit in right with Asami and The Duke! And then once the dinosaurs entered…that was my type of humor for sure! I’m excited for the last two commissions this month, and yes, Children of the Sea is a visual FEAST for sure! Thank you for the comment and kind words! Stay warm, too!

Wow there hasn’t been a commission where I haven’t had a great time and this is no different. Sunspots really knows how to cheer someone up. 🤣 Idk what I was walking into so this was a fun surprise. What a different ✨ aesthetic ✨ indeed. Then there’s the stigma and stereotypes against different regions in the movie that took me out haha. It did remind me of the friction between areas here in the U.S. as well. *cough* east coast is superior *cough* *cough* This is an amazing “urban legend.” Goodness that radio broadcast have any more bl stories?? I’d love to listen! So yeah- Before this film I don’t think I’ve come across Mineo Maya’s works before. His artstyle is so pretty and learning about how long he’s been in the game is astounding. I’m glad to have seen this because now I kinda wanna check out even more 😆 That horse back riding scene was indeed a hoot! It’s one of my fav scenes along with the silly Momomi’s fish out of water scenes. That random pterodactyl shot was SO over the top and I am such a fan. There’s still a couple more commissions to catch up to but I’m almost there! Thanks again Sunspot for a wonderful pick.
