It's finally time to watch an absolute anime cult classic STAPLE and I'm so glad that patron Sean commissioned this one for us - what an abstract, surrealist TREAT! This one has a lot left to us the audience to interpret and I'm so excited to talk about it with you all as we round out spooky season on the channel!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! Visually, this movie is so beautiful! And yessss, I love that it’s so abstract and ambiguous! I’m glad that the Tinder profile joke went over, haha! And yessss, the patriarchal reading of those systems against women and their bodies/agency - the reading is ripe for dissecting! And yeah, so many themes of resistance, especially with the girl! And yeah, I can totally see that connection to Mind Game as well (wow, more on connections to Mind Game in the first week of November…ahem). I really hope I can see this in theaters as well! And yeah, I could believe in the girl being an angel as well -- I mean....the title being Angel's Egg could apply to that as well! And ooohhh, of COURSE the fish is connected to Lazarus! Haha, that's fun! And yeah, the seamen trying to catch a risen from the dead fish surely has connections to faith and Christianity, perhaps? I'm so excited you get to hear this movie, if anything, on the big screen! The score is SO good! And post-apocalyptic religious symbolism in this day and age? Why not! :P And yeah, AI just makes me feel gross. Hand drawn all the way, though CGI has made great strides! And hopefully one day I'll see Ghost in the Shell! I definitely agree it is one of those works where different people can walk away with quite a different reading, very fun. 🥰 The Alabama Tinder profile sent me 🤣 I very much see that Moby-Dick reading with the egg as an unreachable truth and something which cannot be known without being destroyed. As well as a representation of ‘violation’ on multiple levels. I can definitely also see a feminist reading of this as an example of how patriarchal systems attempt to destroy and invalidate forms of knowledge/labour/etc primarily ‘associated’ with women. Themes of resistance? 😆 Definitely here. Especially in the girl’s resistance against the emptiness of this world, refusing to stop maintaining her ritual. I think similarly to Mind Game there is also this creative resistance against the narrative being "explained" in most common ways or even via dialogue. I’m really hoping the 4K restoration will come around somewhere near me and I will get to experience it again. As a non Christian myself, I can understand the themes of the bible and I find them literarily interesting. It reminds me of how I interpreted Narnia when I read it as a child, totally different than a believer! I’ve always thought the girl was an angel all along. I find the choice of fish interesting. It is a coelacanth! The thing about coelacanths is that they are a Lazarus taxon. And what that is, is an organism that is supposedly extinct due to the fossil record. It is believed to be extinct since it does show up, and then it is rediscovered alive! So basically they rise from the dead.
