Natsume Yuujinchou Season 7: Episode 3 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*STRAWMAN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

It's my favorite kind of episode: One with a new character AND a Natori-themed episode! What fun! And this round is a lovely self-contained story with Natsume and Natori teaming up to handle a mysterious set of yokai playing a "game" with an unsuspecting human...this mangaka is FULL of teases this week, for us, though!

Natsume Yuujinchou Season 7: Episode 3 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

I really like the idea of expanding the lore and world-building seven seasons in and it doesn’t feel cheap and instead feels justified and fresh! And that does bring to mind the question of Reiko’s actions and her intentions! And it brings up what Natsume might be capable of which presents alllllll kinds of possibilities, doesn’t it? Fun times! I love that concept that while Natsume didn’t “Create” an artificial yokai... he sort of manipulated something like one would in that instance. RIGHT?! The idea of “half-yokai” just was a question or plot item I was NOT ready for in this series seven seasons in! And yeah, that’s a great point that the yokai that’s in his arm might know about Reiko or the grandfather…hm, indeed! Y’all know I love a good theory! *puts on tinfoil hat* That’s a neat theory about Yorishima…I’m not sure what I think on it but I’m definitely curious to see if him or the yokai reveal something about him in the future; I don’t think it’s the last we’ve seen of him, for sure. You can’t introduce a character that looks THAT cool and have him as a one-episode character! XD But then again…stranger things HAVE happened! I agree, though, it’s awesome we can theorize like this with it being the SEVENTH season of the show and all! I agree with you on the summary of the seasons! And to see Natsume hit his stride this season is so cool! I love how much he’s grown! I love that idea that he’s finding that balance between living his life and also dealing with the yokai he encounters! Thank you so much for the comment! Here’s to the next episode! 😀

Isn’t it WILD to think we’re on Episode 77!? I cannot believe it! I love that Natsume’s Happiness is connected to the bike riding - that’s a great callback to Nishimura and Kitamoto with him back in season 3! Madara was on point in the cute department with this episode, wasn’t he? Our smug pig cat! XD To be fair, I know the feeling - there was a famous bakery in a town I took the team I coach to and the night we arrived, they wanted to go, but I told them to wait and the following day - after the tournament - we’d stop by and get something to go. Little did I know…the bakery was closed that day. T_T Lesson learned! Oohhh, I love that dialogue about the exorcists and purporting the scarecrow story! A literal use of “the strawman” fallacy in a way, eh? Yorishima immediately clocking how Natsume and Natori are different? Love it, too! <3 I hope we one day see more of him! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I can’t wait for more with this season!

Loved the reaction and discussion! Can’t believe we’re on episode 77! And there is so much to talk about in this one. 🥰 Various moments I loved: Your note about the OP shot of Natsume on the bicycle, made me think back to when Nishimura and Kitamoto taught him all the way back in S3E9 🥰 The Mid-ranks and Madara using Natsume to buy them sweets for their super-serious-very-important investigation 😆 Madara in his full form bumping one of the scarecrows with the bottom of his chin (snout?) The last scarecrow just leaving when asked to One of the worst and most universal travel experiences – closed bakeries! 😂 Really loved this example of strong feelings (in this case hope and gratitude) inadvertently creating these yokai, who then did their best with the fields and then were left to find a new purpose. Absolutely agree with your point about the hypocrisy of the exorcists. And there is also a great example of how language is used to perpetuate oppressive worldviews: the constant reference to how the scarecrows came to be via something ‘forbidden’ – which immediately implies a knowing action. I don’t think the people who ‘made’ this happen had any idea, they just felt their feelings. But the conflating of those using these ‘techniques’ knowingly and those completely accidentally (by simply being human) – is a hallmark of an oppressive group erasing nuance and turning something like this into an intentional transgression. They attempt to blur the line between malicious intent and expression of genuine (and incredibly positive) emotion. And this is often done so easily that they (in this case e.g. Natori) don’t even notice this creep into their language and infect the language of others around them. Ugh! Love Yorishima spending all of 2min with Natsume before nailing exactly the difference between him and Natori! Big fan of him immediately. 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙

I remember when season 7 started with the yokai that was a bird statue that broke and wanted to return to its original home as a new Natsume enjoyer I was like this feels like Natsume but also feels weird because I dont think we've ever explored the feelings of an inanimate object other than dolls at least and then this episode happened and I was like ok so this is new territory for this season Im here for it. I think the expansion of the lore of what is forbidden in the human/yokai relationship is interesting because now it brings up questions like Did Reiko intentionally bind the yokai to the book or did she as Natsume suggested think that this was just a fun game. It's also kind of scary but intriguing to think about the fact that just being spiritually powerful can unintentionally create yokai. Natsume's existence or presence then could do exactly that or Matoba or Natori. In the same episode with the bird statue yokai two episodes ago I think it is implied that while Natsume's spiritual power played a part as to why the yokai could use the mini Sensei as a temporary vessel which sort of adds to the discussion made by Yorishima in this episode. Also half yokai exist umm ok then seventh season uhh thanks for now giving me all these weird questions now but for now I dont think that Yorishima is connected to Reiko but the yokai inside him might be connected to her or the Book of Friends. *Theory ranting ahead* It would be wild if the simple solution to the mystery of the grandfather is that Yorishima is the grandfather and having the yokai in his arm is messing with his memories they made a point that he's older than he looks. It was kind of interesting as well that Madara said the place makes him uncomfortable but then he was so overly excited and relaxed with Yorishima himself *Theory ranting end* I love that we're this deep in and we can still expand the world of Natsume like this. I think this season at least with the first two episodes have shifted the usual formula in a phenomenal way With season one or two Natsume was just going around helping yokai and realizing he wants to strike that balance between yokai and humans, season three and four explored Natsume alot deeper his childhood his trauma then slowly expanded the world of the exorcists then with season five we had Natsume be alot more certain of his bonds but alot more vulnerable and panicked with how to deal with the dangerous yokai and Matoba specifically. Season six Natsume started to hit that sweet spot of Natsume realizing that he can help the yokai but not jump in head first but at the same time be alot more proactive and confrontational. Now with the first two episodes of this season it feels that Natsume has fully mellowed out and has hit that sweet spot where he still is careful and values his safety but he doesnt need to be overly cautious or unnecessarily confrontational I think the opening of Natsume on a bike and the first two episodes having Natsume doing gardening and pottery exploring different hobbies and then the yokai more get involved with him as he just does his normal routine than the other way around where Natsume is doing his normal routine and stumbles into a situation is how you just show subtly that Natsume has grown alot as a character and he has become alot more emotionally and socially healthy as a character and he has answered his question without realizing it Can I live without being dragged around by yokai? While yes he still gets thrown into certain situations he isnt living being dragged around by yokai but choosing when it is best to get involved or just choosing that he'd like to be involved. This was a long catch up comment but I love season 7 so far.
