THE SUMMER HIKARU DIED: Episode 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Yessss, that scene is SO GOOD! “We’ve got our own thing” is such a perfect statement. And yes, I love the message and us getting more scenes like that - thank you for the kind words; this show really makes me emotional in places, because I see spaces explored that connect to people I know and myself - ugh, I just *love* this show! UGH, I could watch Yoshiki ruffling “Hikaru’s” hair all day. I totally see that connection with that “Safe Space” conversation! And yessss, the “back into the closet” conversation rather than confronting reality and who you are - LOVE how this show handles it! I have so much to connect to your last paragraph in Episode 10, so I’m excited for that reaction to be out! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

I LOVE that the moment becomes this queer platonic-for-now-at-least moment or at least of a dynamic that’s not so hard to define! I also am adoring of the Gay/Ace dynamic developing here - I mean…if you considered Death Note to be an example of that…but that’s my own shipping. ;) ANYWAY, I’m so glad you pointed that out here! “We have our own thing” is just so beautiful! And yessss, I love that message of Yoshiki seeing “Hikaru” as separate from OG Hikaru! LOVE IT! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment!

The most impactful moment for me so far is that scene where Yoshiki tells Hikaru, "We’ve got our own thing, we don't gotta follow the rules". It's so blatantly queer in a way that queer people can connect with and understand. To be queer is to break out of those traditional relationships, whether it be aroace, same-sex, etc, and I think this show did a really good job of putting it into words - "our own thing". I 100% get the worry about it though, since it's rare to get a nuanced perspective like this in a lot of medias 💔 I think you explained it perfectly, it also makes me emotional too, even just hearing you expand on it 😭 😭 I also think that scene where Yoshiki is ruffling Hikaru's hair and making a promise to himself to try and find a place where they can be free - it feels so reminiscent of that scene at the river where Yoshiki and Hikaru were kids, and the original Hikaru offered Yoshiki a safe place. The whole talk of just going back to the mountain to make things easier, so reminiscent of going back into the closet 💔 It's also really sad to think that, one of the biggest differences in Yoshiki's perspective is that the original Hikaru was a "closed book", in comparison to the new Hikaru, who is very... easy to read 😆 It makes me wonder just how much more the original Hikaru was hiding from Yoshiki - he feels so close yet so far at the same time. I do think that new Hikaru's openness and innocence has allowed Yoshiki to also become more open.. I hope they can find that place where they can be free ❤️‍🩹 ❤️‍🩹

I love the conversation where Yoshiki says staring at “Hikaru’s” body doesn’t affect him now. I totally get the cynicism of worrying it’s a ‘no-homo’ moment, but I feel like it’s much more of a ‘yes-queer’ moment. Like you said, I think it’s something that clicks easier with queer people. It’s very common in queer relationships to have dynamics that are difficult to define. It’s also common in queer relationships where each person involved has a different sexuality and can’t entirely relate to the other person (Gay/Bi, straight/bi, etc.). In this case, it feels to me like a Gay/Ace dynamic, which is super interesting and not something I think I’ve ever seen in media before, and it’s really cool to see it explored. Like Yoshiki says, sometimes it just comes down to “we have our own thing” and leaving it undefined is totally okay. It doesn’t reduce the amount or intensity of the love. Sometimes it’s just outside of what people can traditionally put into words. It’s a very queer experience. And, I also love that the scene doubles as a way to emphasize that Yoshiki is seeing “Hikaru” as his own person now, and not just a reflection of OG Hikaru. :)
