[wip] Enamel pin making

New pins 😙

I ended up making five different types like this. - by the way, it's not as full set or gacha(mystery box) type! You can purchase the desired type individually 😘

1. Design

shy shrimp is the character I am most attached to. (The second is Crabby crab, with a knife. Due to artist's favoritism toward shrimp, Crabby crab's personality just got a little crabby)

[ Next rewards poll ] Pin design (~17. Dec)

Shy shrimp design was eliminated in the 2019 vote lol

Wooden pin sample

So, I also made it with wooden pins in 2020.

Here's a shot of the overall design.

The blue badge on the bottom right is an color coating version, but the factory I was planning to make it with didn't support it.

If I hadn't posted the design poll, I would made Cherry or Bee shrimp. Because those are the shrimp I raised before 😂

I was surprised to see the results. The Cherry, Skyblue, Pink, and Orange Rili tables came out almost the same. So I ended up making more varieties than I had planned.

I will make it in a small size of 2cm(0.8inch).

Then it will be cute because it is almost the same size as the actual freshwater shrimp!

2. Factory

My first nudibranch pin was made in Korea, and the pins after that were made in China.

If I make a lot of them, it is much cheaper to make them in China. It probably varies from factory to factory, but in my experience, the production cost was about 4-6 times different. In Korea, the price discount is not that big when I make more. Instead, there is no shipping cost, and I can make them little by little frequently. Above all else the advantage of a production experience that is comfortable in many ways! Because there are quite a few variables when placing a custom order overseas. Ordering errors via different language, shipping accidents, after-sales service, customs clearance, etc.

3. Screw & nut

The special feature of this pin is the back.

It is a Screw & nut type.

Usually, butterfly clutches or rubber clutches are used, but these have screws and are fixed by turning. So there is almost no risk of losing them. - Sometimes, if they become loose, you can tighten them. I really liked it when I consulted with the factory. So I am going to try applying it to this pin.

4. Backing card

I like the packaging method I used before ( Backing card design and postcard sample ) I'm going to try making it the same way.

I usually test the size like this haha

I plan to print it on recycled paper. I have used it once before for wooden pin backing card. Recycled paper has dust particles. The drawing in this package feels like it was drawn with a pencil, so this dusty texture will match the drawing :D - In the background you can see a sneak peek of crabby crab's new sketch ideas.

Oh, I like those kind of magnets, too! They're fun to throw or slap onto a fridge or a cabinet! "You get a magnet! *Slaps onto fridge* And you get a magnet! *Throws onto cabinet.*" Lol

Haha I'm glad you like my characters. I went to the site you told me about and looked around the store, and there seem to be a lot of good art products. But I couldn't find the magnet, so I searched for enamel magnets separately. I knew you could make charms with enamel pins, but I didn't know you could make magnets too! It's not the same, but I have magnets in my Redbubble store. I bought one myself, and the magnetic force isn't that strong, but it's nice for sticking them on like stickers 😁 (https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cc9nN_Bg4k8/ )

When I created the shy shrimp character, there were probably only a handful of people who drew freshwater shrimp-I might just not have discovered it-, but now I can see shrimp drawings by various artists in the social media's recommendations tab. It's very good thing that there are more drawings of specific shrimp, not food 💕

I'm so excited to see how these turn out 😍 I love shy shrimp too ❤️ it's been so satisfying seeing love for freshwater shrimp become more and more mainstream over the past decade. They used to be unknown/niche, but now it seems like everyone knows about them! 🎉

Tony Richmond

It's a shrimp day! 🦐🎉 I adore the shy shrimp and they're a favorite of mine, too! My favorites are shy shrimp, crabby crab and the axolotl that is friends with crabby crab. 😁 I love the packaging and the locking backing you're using. I bought some packs of 2 different types of locking pin backings to try them out because I hate losing my enamel pins. This means I don't have to worry about them, yay! Have you thought about making tiny magnets that are like the enamel pins at some point? I have bought a set of 3 very tiny magnets from kluia.co and the magnets are so strong! They're holding up cards and pictures on my fridge like a champ! They look like enamel pins and it's nice to show them off in other areas that wouldn't work with a pin.

JM

Oh, I'm searching and looking at the pictures now. Oh... I didn't know something like this existed! Maybe the principle is similar to the screw method somehow?? Thanks for sharing the info! And I'm glad you made my pin safe 💕

pikaole

They come with a little tool shaped like an "L" that you use to screw them on tightly to your pin! I've never lost a pin while using them (I use them on all my Pikaole pins for safe keeping 🥰) I'm not sure if they have a specific name, but you can search for "locking pin back" and they're available from lots of places :D I would definitely recommend it if you have a lot of pins on bags or jackets

Utopia Coll

It made me so happy to think that our meet is connected by shrimp 🥹

pikaole

Shy shrimp is how I found you so I'm looking forward to buying a pin ^^

Shawna

Oh? I wonder what kind of method it is! Is there a safety device? I'm glad you like the screw type :D

pikaole

Me too. Sometimes I can't use something I treasure so much that I might lose it 😂 I tend to use two safety lines for key rings/charms. But I can't do that with pins! I'm glad you like both the packaging and the back type.

pikaole

That’s super cool! Thanks for the insight into your drawing!

Seth K.

Thank you! All shrimp pins will be comfortable on the moss ball.

pikaole

Originally, I preferred to draw on paper during the idea stage. But when I started Patreon, I started writing WIP posts, and digital is much cleaner for readability, so I do it digitally these days at very first stage. My early WIP posts used to be a lot more analog! But since GIF ideas often come to me in a flash, I tend to writing/drawing them down in a notepad spread out on my desk whenever an idea comes to mind.

pikaole

So cool! That crabby crab sneak peek made me think of something. Do you prefer drawing on physical paper or digitally?

Seth K.

I can't wait for these! The packaging "background" is so cute too, perfect for shy shrimp to rest on ♥️

Denise M

I also show favoritism towards shy shrimp 😅 I love the way you packaged the pin I’d received, it’s very cute and cute for display too when the pin isn’t being used! The screw backing will also be great, I’m always nervous to wear pins because I’ve lost some cute ones because of the less secure backing.

Venera

WOW, the screw backing is so exciting to see!! I usually use special pin backs to keep my pins on, I'm excited that I won't need them for these shrimps! I can't wait to wear these pins :D
