Which he then immediately decides against.

You guys view Michael Scott a whole lot differently than I do, lol.

Chuck had told Kim that their father was missing $40k, which would've been impossible for little Jimmy to steal at $4 or $5 a pop, yet Chuck implied (assumed?) it was all due to Jimmy. The one scene we saw Jimmy steal $4, Dad had given away $10. Re Jimmy quitting D&M, I think everyone's overthinking it. Jimmy DID try to succeed at D&M from the start. 1st, his stint in Amarillo where he signed 200 new clients. Everyone was thrilled with his success, Kim proud of him, until Chuck pointed out that solicitation was illegal, even though Chuck had no problem when Jimmy solicited the "mall walkers." Suddenly, a success he worked hard at turned into a failure. 2nd, the commercial. Again, Jimmy worked hard to succeed at acquiring 200 phone calls, but that success also came to be viewed as a failure. His punishment, having to answer to a younger, junior, very annoying attorney with far less experience. Even when he went to the courthouse with her, Jimmy's tried and true method of getting better court dates by giving the black lady in the booth a stuffed animal, a method he had perfected over years, was suddenly seen as criminal. A square peg in a round hole indeed. But he did try to the best of his ability, and saw that this gig wouldn't or couldn't ever work out for him. Who wouldn't want to quit?

It's interesting. Chuck acknowledged that his dad wasn't the best businessman in his chat with Kim yet apparently lays all the blame on Jimmy for the loss of the business & their father's subsequent death. But he does acknowledge that he's "not a bad person. It's just, he can't help himself" effectively likening Jimmy to a rule-bending addict. And is he wrong? Well he couldn't keep the D&M job despite all the perks they gave him? He can't even in good conscience say that he's going to follow the rules in his new solo practice. Perhaps if he had joined HHM after passing the bar he may have changed - who knows? - but you can certainly see why Chuck may not want someone who seems incapable of following the rules working for your company, especially when they're your family. You did pick up on why Kim opted out of the S&C job. I think the reason her pitch to Jimmy is better than going to S&C or starting totally solo is because she gets out from under the thumb of a senior partner and can spread her wings, but also doesn't have to face the full expenditure of starting your own business. But by remaining separate from Jimmy she detaches herself from the risk that comes from working with a "colourful" (Yes, I'm English :P) lawyer. Finally, if you're still reading this far: The reason for the intro being cut short is because they wanted to give it the impression of a crappy, low-budget Saul commercial like the ones he does in BB. They imagined that he'd have a film student (like the ones he hires in BCS) do it and they accidentally chopped off the last few notes 😂

Watch this episode back and mentally insert Michael Scott for Jimmy and it still makes complete sense.

"I have to be myself, Kim." Immediately pretends to be a British secretary.
