"What an eccentric performance!", King Arthur, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" This is a fun, bizzare film - lots of comedy sketches tied loosely into a plot - lots of quotable stuff. I first saw it with friends at the cinema around my first year of University. "All right, put that away, sonny.", Police, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" But there was no black screen for several minutes in the cinema at the end. As I recall, the house lights suddenly just came up (with the organ music playing) after the police shut down the filming. Quite a shock. "Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no system for a basis of government.", Dennis, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" I think my favourite parts of the film are the overeducated soldiers (like the ones discussing swallows at the beginning) and the overeducated peasants (like Dennis, the constitutional expert). Oh, and the joke about surviving the attack of the Black Beast because the animator died of a heart attack. The Monty Python troop, all of them writers for the film and performers in the film, were University graduates (Oxford and Cambridge), so they could write these bizzare intellectually satisfying scenes. "You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!!", Dennis, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" BTW: I wasn't sure - did you pick up that the major actors of the troop were playing multiple roles? John Cleese plays The Black Knight, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Tim the Enchanter etc. Michael Palin plays Dennis, Sir Galahad the Pure, the King of Swamp Castle, the leader of the Knights who say "Ni!", etc. etc. "It's just a flesh wound!" ... "Tis but a scratch!", The Black Knight, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" There are some lines from the Black Knight: "None shall pass." and "I move for no man." that ring differently to people who have seen "The Lord of the Rings" movies. "He must have died while carving it.", Brother Maynard, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" The jokes still work today - the Colbert writers used exactly this aaaargh joke on one of the shows this week. "I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!", Dennis, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" Thanks for the reaction. "Monty Python's Life of Brian" is a fun film too.
