As for "locking yourself out", there are holes in the bottom of the door catch to put in paddle-locks. When you want the extra security, deploy the locks. When you know that you are going to be using the gates, remove one or both. The only thing you loose is convenience when locked out of the house, you wouldn't be able to get if if the locks were deployed. Nice work over all.

next time use torx screws insted of philips if you're use an impact wrench. These can transfer the forces much better into the screw.

Good thing that even electrical engineers have to study statics and dynamics. Sadly, civil engineers don't have to study advanced circuits!
