The Amazing Eddy Current [and the scope winners]

Eddy Current is awesome and awful at the same time! Cherish it!

Also congrats to the winners of the 4 channel scope (although some have not replied yet, so I might have to draw new people!)

- James Smy.

- Marek Per.

- Not responded! (will update when responds)

Thanks a lot everyone for huge support!

Have fun!

Have the not responded responded?

Unread and spam folder is empty, damn :P

Full Bridge Rectifier!!! Did I win?

I was thinking the same thing! Then yesterday I got my very own digital oscilloscope. Would still respond tho:)

"my wife" suuuuuuuure, good one

OK, How come your bucking freakers didn't trip? It might be that the current was not high for long enough, but I wouldn't think you could beat a breaker with something as slow as you demonstrated. I think this issue needs to be revisted in it's own video.

If they dont claim it, my wife wants one ;)

How do I get my "personalized audio" ?

:) 10 amp voltmeter, good one!

I would so respond him right now...

To make your life easier you just need to draw me for a scope, I promise I will respond!

Here's why the single layer Al foil didn't slow the magnet's fall and why the welding of the laminated sheets of the transformer won't matter. In an AC transformer that uses a solid iron core, there is a changing magnetic field in the core that "points" along the "O" of the core (assuming an O-core). That means that the eddys are induced perpendicular to that direction, which is through the full thickness of the core. By splitting the core into laminated sheets, the only eddys that can be created are through the thickness of the sheet, which is tiny compared to the thickness of a solid iron core. That's a smaller ring, which creates a smaller induced field, which limits transformer losses. The same thing applies to the Al foil. The eddys are generated in the direction of the thickness of the sheet, which is tiny. By using a a "solid" (laminated, but in full contact) roll of Al, the eddys are free to form in the larger thickness. You can test this by unrolling the Al foil, and re-rolling it with paper on top. The paper will insulate the "layers" and the magnet should fall again virtually unhindered, despite the fact that the same mass of Al is used. And of course, the welding of the laminated cores won't do much because it's only welded on the outside surface, and there is no complete circuit path in the thickness direction.

Interestingly, fitness equipment such as some exercise bikes take advantage of eddy currents for resistance. Just a pity they don't use dynamos instead, which would give an incentive to exercise more often to see what one can power up.

Alright, this video right here? This is what I'm paying you for! Keep it up.

"Eddies," said Ford, "in the space-time continuum." "Ah," nodded Arthur, "is he? Is he?" He pushed his hands into the pocket of his dressing gown and looked knowledgeably into the distance. "What?" said Ford. "Er, who," said Arthur, "is Eddy, then, exactly, then?" "There!" said Ford, shooting out his arm. "There, behind that sofa!" Arthur looked. Much to his surprise, there was a velvet paisley-covered Chesterfield sofa in the field in front of them. He boggled intelligently at it. Shrewd questions sprang into his mind. "Why," he said, "is there a sofa in that field?" "I told you!" shouted Ford, leaping to his feet. "Eddies in the space-time continuum!" "And this is his sofa, is it?" asked Arthur, struggling to his feet and, he hoped, though not very optimistically, to his senses. (Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

"I created a voltmeter.. that's drawing ten amps" made me laugh really, really hard.

I can use a good scope!

I will respond if you pick me :D

"The Amazing Eddy" How could I not have won?

Eddy Gurge

Wish it was ME!

I accidentally deleted my email, so responding just in case.

Cleveland Prescott

Am I one of the winners (please let it be me)?

Mike oliver

Thank you for another informative video Mehdi! And for the first time I noticed the clock in the back. It really shows how much time goes into recording videos like this! Keep up the awesome work!

oh i get it, you PN them and post the Names after it. I thought the winner has to see the Post. Nervermind, got it now

Where is the List of the winners ?

Responding, just in case I won and don't know it yet.

I just noticed that you have really nice handwriting. Cool video man.

fifth comment. great as always

I don't see a message in my spam-folder, so it's not me :# Maybe it's Eddy.

Fingers crossed. Me and my daughter need one, keep up the great work mate. Ant wait for you to get your own lab out of the house.
