Make a SUPER HIGH VOLTAGE Capacitor

Wanna make high voltage capacitors? Look no further!

This month you are in for the one Keysight and the two Hantek scope giveaways! I'll draw the Keysight soon.

Put your name in the link below as well for the Hantek giveaways.

Make a SUPER HIGH VOLTAGE Capacitor

Comments

Could you use your Tesla coil with a HV diode to charge your HV cap? Maybe a microwave oven diode?

Kevin Cherry

Started making a layden jar, ended up with a brine battery xD

Hey I tried making a smaller version of your second capacitor and it shows on my multimeter to have about 4 nanofarads of capacitance and it's not shorted, I try to charge it at 12v DC with my variable power supply and it doesn't seem to charge (no current flows on the power supply display) I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, any ideas?

Give me the full bridge scope!!!

Thought you should know: the CircuitSpecialists.com link in your Patreon post is misspelled, so does not work.

Give me that scope please :)

How many takes did you do by getting shocked

I thought the same thing about tkor, tkor was doing it wrong

Multiple electric shocks in this video... you're really giving us good value for our money Mehdi!

Chris Talbot

Gonna have to go and google "lineartron" now, cheers! :p

Lots of good questions there George! One of the problems in working with very high voltages, aside from the higher insulation resistance and ratings - therefore, expense - required of the components you're working with, is that such experiments tend to generate a lot of electrical noise and RFI, and there are laws/regulations governing that. Mehdi is no doubt aware of this, personally I wouldn't want to go too much bigger than the kinds of Tesla coils he's already built for fear of attracting "the wrong kind of attention". :) There's also a safety aspect, obviously. I'm aware that people have built and demonstrated larger HV devices/experiments on youtube but they are generally built and demonstrated in dedicated lab rooms, or at the very least they are shown in a garage/shed or somewhere out of the way of everyday human traffic. Mehdi records his videos in his home, where his wife and daughter live... not a great environment for doing experiments with super high voltages and related equipment! ;) But who knows... if he continues to be successful in gaining Patreon supporters and income, perhaps he will soon be able to afford a dedicated studio space and we might see some more exciting experiments!

What happens if you connect an inductor to your capacitor and bring the 2 free ends close enough together to cause a spark? I guess the air gap would be like a resistor. Can you get a super high voltage RLC oscillation featuring multiple sparks going? Maybe the sparks would seem like one spark but your oscilloscope might pick up some oscillations. Will the inductor burnout or is the high voltage not of a long enough duration? And if you managed to get a few cycles from a super high voltage RLC circuit would you be able to detect it with a radio or cellphone or something? This could be a new set of videos for you. Freshening up the old intro to electronics lab experiments with super high voltages. Is there a way to make a super high voltage operational amplifier? I believe there are transistors rated at very high voltages, maybe duplicating standard electronics lab transistor experiments at super high voltages.

Heh, not really! Considering I still have to do like 30 shots per clip! But thanks anyway!

I was curious about this as well. However, considering how ESR was determined on the first test (through the ball and into the salt water), I imagine that the resistance of the aluminum would be extremely low, sub 1 ohm range.

Love your series! I've learned more about electricity by watching them than any other time in my life. I was curious, would you be able to do a video on solar panels, how they work?

Slam dunk on this video Mehdi! Hey your English is getting really good too. Not that it was ever bad, but I can tell it has gotten easier for you to make videos.

Capacitors are much simpler than I thought! Very low price haha๐Ÿ˜ give me one

Very nice! Could you share what ESR value your aluminum sheet capacitor has compared to your Leyden Jar?

Could you fold the sheets like a fan, to increase the surface areas that way...? Or would it be better to just have multiple smaller capacitors in a bank? Or should I just keep buying cheap electrolytic capacitors.... They're cheap. Also I don't really have any use for them anyway.

??????????????????? WHAT ?????????????? ..... A capacitor STOPS AC ..... ?????????????

Hi, ..... there was nothing in the jar to start with, ... ha ha ha..... Watch the video again & learn...... ha ha

Brilliant as usual Mehdi. ..... It seems to me that, King Junior, does not understand electronics as well as he thinks he does. ..... But hey, ..... he's learning through practice and experimenting. (which is dangerous in some ways). ..... So, ..... thanks again for yet another brilliant video, ..... ( have I grovelled enough yet ) ?????

The email link for Circuit Specialists misspelled their name and this the link doesn't work. FYI

Great video! Gave me A good laugh and I learned about capacitors! Thank you Mehdi! I would like to get a scope so I could donate it to my high school.

Wait, what was in that jar to start with?

I'd love to learn by seeing "actual wave forms" :)

I know you are saying sheet(s) of stuff... but I SWEAR it sounds like you are saying shits of stuff. lol Every time you say sheet, I SWEAR You are purposefully saying shit! lol xD

Mr Train

VERY LOW PRICE

I made a wine bottle capacitor when I got my hands on an 5kV ignition transformer in high school. It certainly increased the arc volume even when it was on AC. Good times, no idea how I didn't kill myself.

yay GIMME DA SCOPE!

Louis Gordnier

YES! VanDeGraff Time! Then make a lineartron with an old LP dust brush and your vacuum pump!

Jason Hoffman

Duuuuude. Who's your tailor??? I have a shirt just like yours. I have not electrocuted myself in many years, though. HaHa. Thanks, Mehdi.

Chuck Kirchner

Keep up the good work Mehdi! Any chance of doing some Arduino stuff? Ive treid finding someone on youtube that does arduino that is as funny and as entertaining as you. No luck yet!

YAY Can I has Pretty Scope

Ms. Fixit

Mehdi and Leyden jars... This will end in pain.
