Making machinema already
Added 2016-03-03 08:14:37 +0000 UTCWhen I decided to start making videos of various TGOR stuff, I realized, to make it look somewhat more professional I'd need to make a cool intro that fits the theme... And well, I just didn't want to make up something in After Effects, everyone does that!
So as a 3d guy I thought of setting up a nice animated scene, but soon it became obvious that I'd spend weeks setting it up, rendering, composing and other stuff like VFX-people have to deal with every day. I didn't have time nor will for that kind of job, it would be a big distraction from working on the actual project.
But a friend of mine gave an idea to use game footage instead... Game footage as an intro?! Nonsense! BUT HEY... wait a minute... I could set up a scene much quicker in Unreal Engine 4 using the game assets I already made and it would be rendered in real-time, cause its an in-game cutscene! Genius! And I also get to show off my game a little bit more!
I started with making the activated Gateway animation for the intro, and it worked surprisingly well! At least I'm happy with the result for now :} Also BIG thanks to Ashtalon for rendering a part of the main theme melody I had stuck in my head since I was little.
Making machinema is fun! Camera fly-throughs are super easy, but complex scenes can be tricky, however, its still much better than waiting days (and being unable to use the PC) till the CPU-offline renderer finishes the job only to realize that you have your lighting wrong... aaand to render it again. nooope.
Unreal Engine old Matinee system is not ideal though, certain important features are missing that were in the previous versions, but there is another, replacement system is in development at the moment. So hopefully we'll have cool cutscene animation tools within the engine soon... Can't wait!
Whenever you see the smooth-interpolated camera motions on the videos - that's the indication of me playing a puppeteer xD
When in-game you can enter "Travel Menu" or "Travel Menu4" to see the scene I made for the intro. You can also enter "Travel Patreon" to get on the map where I made the introduction video.
