Nineteen years and counting...

Nineteen years ago this June, I moved to Las Vegas. It's hard to even imagine it's been that long. I guess I would now be considered a native, by all intents and purposes. When I moved here, everyone said that nobody stayed in Vegas for long. People would come and go. Though I think that has changed some in the last 10 or 15 years, as Vegas has spread out and more families and retirees have moved in.

I really didn't think I would stay. To be honest, I hated it at first. Coming from Los Angeles and before that, the San Francisco Bay Area, it was all very different. Where was the grass? It can't really be 115 degrees in the summer, can it? What do you mean I need a winter coat ? Isn't it always warm in the desert? (I really had to buy one, as I hadn't worn one in LA for years!) Where can I see the ballet or where's the jazz club?

Slowly, but surely, it started to grow on me. I took up golf for a bit, so I could see grass. Las Vegas built the Smith Center where we now have Ballet & Jazz, and I found out I could go to a new restaurant on the Strip every weekend  and probably not get to all of them! We also have so many great concerts and shows that come into town. It is, after all, the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Aside from all the things to do, I really fell in love with the beauty of living in the desert. I especially love the view of the Spring Mountains surrounding the valley at dusk; that perfect dark shade of blue where it looks like the mountains are cutouts in the sky. Mt. Charleston is just 45 minutes away, with tons of hiking trails, 20 degrees cooler in the summer and a small ski resort in the winter. As hot as it gets, it is a dry heat which you get used to. I just kind of equate our really hot days to snow days. You do things early, stay in with AC and pool time is at night 😊Okay, that's much better than a snow day!!! The best time of year, in my opinion, is March & April and October & November. But truthfully, living in Las Vegas year round is pretty great πŸ₯°

Absolutely! Hope you get a chance to hike some of those trails. I hear the colors are changing a bit already, so I'll need to get up there soon to see the aspens πŸ’•

My father's siblings started to migrate to Las Vegas in the early 70's. I spent many a vacation in Vegas as a youth visiting family. Back then the Tropicana was an island with nothing around it for miles. The next casino down the strip was Caesar's Palace. Like you said, it's changed a lot over the years and the space between those two casinos is now filled with still more casinos. My uncle had a boat on Lake Mead and we go there on weekends or we'd go up to Mt. Charleston. My love for hiking had begun at that time, so I've never been able to hike the trails you mentioned. There's still time though:) Thanks for sharing - it's much appreciated.

Isn’t it amazing when you find a place where you fit and that you enjoy? Especially when it turns out to be a surprise!

I’ve only been a few times, but I absolutely love the scenery. One thing I know for sure is that Vegas is lucky to have you. πŸ’–
