Starwatch hub scenes enhancements

Hey everyone!

We're currently working on the last bits of content for Starwatch's next patch 0.3.10 so we can put it in early access as soon as everything is ready.

While working on the new hub locations aboard the ship, we've been experimenting with a few changes to improve the player experience in these locations.

Currently, choices in hub locations are always at the bottom of the scene, and when these scenes are too long like when there's one or two characters available at that location, it can happen that the interaction button requires to scroll down, sometimes only for the button and not for additional text.

Inspired by Silent Echo's unified choice bar, we've experimented with adding the same behavior to Starwatch, but instead of being at the bottom, we're putting it between the image and the text, such as in the example below:

We find this option interesting as it makes the location of the buttons predictable (muscle memory will love it) but we would like to know what you think about this change and if it is something you want to see in the game.

If you do like it, we will take some time during 0.4.0's development to apply it to the existing hub locations so everything works the same.

Have fun!

Comments

Hey there, you're definitely right about that, which is why we're looking at adding them specifically to "hub" scenes, which in our mind are places that are most commonly going to be used for locations that often see player activity for mundane tasks, such as setting a new destination for the cruiser. For normal scenes and other locations, the options would still show up after the content, so as to prevent missing anything from the conversation.

That seems only appropriate for pure navigation choices, where the descriptive text has no real purpose. In any other circumstance, it makes no chronological sense to put your action responses before the text describing what it is you're responding to.

It feels very Mass Effect-y. I like it
