Martha was the first companion I watched through for doctor who. I immediately loved everything about her. She's brave and smart and just great. I still have to catch up and watch the rest of your reactions but I really enjoyed this one.

1:18:59 not late enough for that kind of surgery… mostly it was people left to there own devices when they shouldn’t in a kind of prison… only the public can pay to view them being “mad”

Excellent video, and on to the next season we've gone! I like Martha and she has an excellent introduction in Smith & Jones. I also like the Judoon (not that they're nice folks, but the aspects they bring to the table) and that showcased some of that well. The JK reference is unfortunate, but at the time it was huge and who knew it'd fall under a shadow later that would drag it out of the rosy warm spot it had in people's hearts.. :(

Tintros

25:27 fun fact this entire episode was a set up to get David to say judoon platoon spin the moon because it’s exactly the kind of tongue twister he struggles with… especially doing his English accent

T0m4002

She had every reason to hate the Doctor, to the degree that she did.

You might see why Queen Elizabeth I was so angry at Ten IF you watch some of the specials after Ten's run is over but otherwise, you aren't likely to find out.

Great reactions! I'm excited for you to react to the rest of this series, it has some of my favourite episodes, and Martha is such a great companion! The overall storyline of this series is really good too.

Martha Jones! Love her! Perhaps my favorite Companion. She has some big shoes to fill in Rose's absence, but she has that curiosity, brilliance, and spirit that The Doctor loves in human beings. I love how this series was not your typical flavor of media, and yet you've embraced it. You're catching the patterns, you're seeing twists coming, and beyond David Tennant, you're enjoying The Doctor as a character. That said, David Tennant is truly peak in the role. The energy, the enthusiasm, the expressions. He is just... delightful. That he can go from this quirky little imp to a terrifying force of nature and wear all the masks of The Doctor is a testament to his acting ability.

These episodes were amazing! Martha is severely underrated. Glad you're enjoying her so far!!

NatMcK7

Yay! Morgan finally meets Martha. I think you like her. 🥳💜

Liam Gradwell

I love all the little nuerodivergent traits you can spot in The Doctor, and David shows it very well.

Butterfly Warrior

I am Martha Jones’ number one defender, the amount of hate she got when her episodes aired was so nasty and insidious and people like to pretend it had nothing to do with race but it absolutely did

I feel I should say that the writer of The Shakespeare Code, Gareth Roberts, is unfortunately the kind of person whose Wikipedia has a whole section on his transphobia

Smith and Jones - At the start of a new season, especially if there's a change in companion or actor for the Doctor, they'll try and reintroduce viewers to the basic concepts of the show like a soft pilot episode. - Martha's actress appeared in Army of Ghosts as the Torchwood employee who sneaks off with her secret boyfriend but gets caught by the Cybermen. They lampshade it by having her say in this episode that she had a cousin who died in the Battle of Canary Wharf. - You know those Shadow Proclamation bylaws the Doctor's always invoking? The Judoon are the space police who enforce them, and they're only too happy to live up to the phrase ACAB. - "Like Ronald Biggs hiding out in Rio de Janeiro" - Ronald "Ronnie" Biggs was the public face of the gang behind the Great Train Robbery. He escaped prison and went on the run. - "I did Magnetics GCSE" - Think it's come up before. GCSEs are school exams you take when you're 16. The Shakespeare Code - So there is a strong link between Shakespeare and witches. His portrayal of them in Macbeth is sort of the foundation of the cliché halloween witch, with cackling, standing round a cauldron reading portents and chanting "Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble". - As depicted, in the olden days when emptying your toilet out the window you would shout "Gardyloo" as a warning. Think it comes from French. - The Globe Theatre still exists in London, though it's a replica. If you ever visit you can watch a play there. - Freedonia was one of the names proposed for the USA when it was being formed. - "Rage, rage against the dying of the light." - It's from the poem "Do not go gentle into that good night", which among other things inspired the President's speech in the alien invasion movie Independence Day. - "57 academics just punched the air." - It's strongly argued that some of Shakespeare's most romantic sonnets were written about men. - Similar to how Prince Albert's death sent Queen Victoria into decades of mourning, Shakespeare's son Hamnet dying permanently changed him and his plays. - You probably know this from DnD or something, but having a fae creature's true name gave you total power over them, and Shakespeare wrote plays set in the fae world. - "That did not age well at all." - I'll say. To my knowledge there is only one more direct reference to her in the series. - omg, I completely forgot this was the first time he meets Elizabeth I.

Another great reaction as always! Looking forward to seeing your reactions to more of Tennant's run! It gets more epic and emotional from here! It's quite the journey.

Season 3 is probably my favourite season of the show if I'm honest...though part of that is nostalgia on my part. Also, I did not realise the sheer irony of some of the lines in 'The Shakespeare Code' given how much David Tennant and JK Rowling don't like each other these days. Granted, the episode was made way before Rowling's toxic and transphobic side became public knowledge. One piece of historical trivia: When Martha was worried about possibly being hauled off as a slave due to being black, that is a certainly valid concern...but not in that specific time and era, as Europeans wouldn't use black slaves until many years later. Racism was definitely a thing in London back then though, but slavery wasn't. Oh, and fun fact: while Tennant is amazing at doing an English accent, the creators noticed that he had issue with words with two 'o's, like 'moon' or 'lagoon' without sounding Scottish, so they deliberately put in the line "Judoon platoon upon the moon" for the sole purpose of seeing if they could make him say it without breaking accent.

Flufux

Yaaay Martha jones my favourite companion. This is going to be a great season💜🧁

The Baker's Ruview

I love that in doctor who all or moste history stuff is real, like love's Labour's Won was indeed a lost shakespeare play

Jamie

29:30, "You're right. I'll look daft with just 1 shoe. Barefoot on the moon." 🤣🤣🤣 30:15, "Some people got one hell of a fetisj." 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Why did that make me laugh for so many (some wrong) reasons😂😂😂 48:50, "IT'S JUST A BOX! BUT IT'S HUGE!!" Yeah. It's bigger on the inside, literally! 1:04:50, if he (Trump) actually does that, it's not gonna be USA. It's gonna be USF, the United States of Freedonia🤣🤣🤣 1:05:25, "If I don't laugh about it, I'll cry about it, you know, so..." Totally understandable🫂 Last edit: That was a good reaction. Fun to meet Shakespeare. Looking forward to the next episode, "Gridlock," which is one of my favorite episodes this season😊

Julie Moum

also that candle feels relevant for this season lol, specifically the finale. iykyk.
