The hottest topic in Japan right now? Bears!🐻

Sadly, this year has seen the highest number of fatal bear attacks since records began—reportedly already more than double the previous worst year. They’re not animals amateurs can just “deal with,” and there are very few people qualified to do so, which is why the government is convening emergency countermeasure meetings.

There’s even a joke that the voices defending the bears must secretly be bears in disguise—but I’ll admit I’d kind of like to see a brown bear scrolling social media on a smartphone.

We live fairly close to the city center, so we’re not directly at risk. Still, in many parts of Japan, mountains press right up against human settlements. Those areas are also rapidly depopulating, which may be creating conditions where bears can more easily wander down into neighborhoods. Maybe it isn’t that bears are expanding so much as humans are retreating.

If I’ve got to face a “threat,” though, I’d rather be ambushed by a sexy monster-type giantess!
